Operation Ivy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
I kill and words will defend it
Got big plans
Blood stained hands
Wanna see my name on the map
On my way to save the world
Got a brand new set of words the going rate is cheap
Unconditional devotion unquestioning belief
Of the ones who thought my righteousness was something to oppose
Can you see the flag rising up beyond the smoke
Of dying authors burning books there was a problem with what they wrote
The flag is hard to read because all flags start to look the same
When covered with the blood of the faithless and insane
Man of many names but the motives stay the same
My actions are a means to an end
My actions are a means to
Operation Ivy's song "Missionary" is a critique of American imperialism and the destructive force of blind nationalism. The lyrics describe the character's desire to make a name for himself by imposing his beliefs on others, even if it involves violence and bloodshed. The first verse, "I start it, I end it, I kill and words will defend it," highlights his obsession with power and control, and how he's willing to use any means necessary to achieve his goals.
The second verse, "Got a brand new set of words the going rate is cheap, Unconditional devotion unquestioning belief," shows how he manipulates people by offering them easy answers and promising them salvation in exchange for blind obedience. He sees himself as a savior, on a mission to "save the world," but in reality, he's just another fanatic who uses religion and ideology to justify his own violent tendencies.
The third verse, "Can you see the flag rising up beyond the smoke, Of dying authors burning books there was a problem with what they wrote," is a reference to how totalitarian regimes throughout history have used censorship and propaganda to maintain their power. The character sees himself as a hero fighting for freedom and democracy, but in reality, he's just another oppressor who uses force to silence anyone who disagrees with him.
Overall, "Missionary" is a powerful critique of American exceptionalism and how it can be used to justify violence and aggression towards other nations and cultures.
