A Fair Judgement
Opeth? Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Fading sun, what have I done
Came so close to what I need most
Nothing left here
Cut the ties, uncovered disguise
Left behind all intertwined
Lost control, moved out of the role now
Leave it be
It was meant for me
Soul sacrifice
Forgot the advice
Lost track of time
In a flurry of smoke
Waiting anxiety
For a fair judgement deserved
The opening verse of Opeth's song "A Fair Judgement" portrays the singer's sense of regret and despair over their own missteps. They are losing sleep and feel as though they have gone too far: "in too deep" with "nothing left here". Even in moments where they were close to finding what they needed most, they still couldn't meet the mark. As the singer acknowledges the extent of their own errors, they cut ties with their previous ways and seek to leave them behind. They feel they've lost control of the situation and seek redemption for their actions. The line "Soul sacrifice, forgot the advice" is particularly poignant as it indicates that the singer gave up something precious but also disregarded a warning that might have saved them.

So many of Akerfeldt’s lyrics sound so much deeper than just the main intended meaning. “Leave it be, it was meant for me. Soul sacrifice, forgot the advice. Lost track of time, in a flurry of smoke” really sounds like the obvious idea of your life coming to a close, but it’s also kinda describing your duty in this world and just pondering what it even means to be a human. Like almost regretting fulfilling your role because it prevented you from being more present

I've never read a comment and felt more connected to what the person writing it meant. On an understanding or personal level.

lets take a moment to appreciate the drumwork from Martin Lopez. He is missed in Opeth and one of the most unique drummers in metal!
@HyruleWanderer
Agreed. Did you listen to his new band Soen?
@mothermadness3586
I always wondered if he can reproduce the same drumming at a concert or if it sounds different every time. I mean I can't follow him at all, no idea what he's doing.
@Daddy53751
100% agreed.
For me the Lopez years were Opeth’s best.🤘🏻

Axenrot is more jazzy , he's a f***ing good drummer too and now he missed me too
