Coil
Opeth? Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She told me why
She told me lies
I always take care of this
I told her how
I've always stayed
Always waited for nothing

When I get out of here
Will I leave you behind?
I found that the years passed despite

When I get out of here
Will I leave you behind?
I found that the years passed despite

And I can see you
Running through the fields of sorrow
Yes I can see you
Running through the fields of sorrow

When you get out of here
When you leave me behind
You find that the years passed us by

When you get out of here
When you leave me behind
You find that those years passed us by

And I can see you
Running through the fields of sorrow

Yes I can see you
Running through the fields of sorrow

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Opeth's song "Coil" delve into themes of betrayal, emotional turmoil, and the passage of time. The singer of the song is reflecting on a past relationship, where the partner had deceived and lied to them. The opening lines "She told me why, She told me lies" express the singer's realization of the dishonesty in the relationship. Despite the care and effort the singer put into the relationship, they were met with deceit and untruthfulness.

The repeated refrain "When I get out of here, Will I leave you behind?" reflects the internal struggle of the singer. They question whether they will be able to move on from the pain and betrayal of the past relationship. The lyrics "I found that the years passed despite" suggest that time continued to move forward, regardless of the emotional baggage and pain that the singer carries from the past.

As the singer contemplates leaving the relationship behind, there is a sense of longing and sadness in the lyrics. The imagery of "Running through the fields of sorrow" conveys a sense of despair and heartache, illustrating the emotional weight that both parties carry in the aftermath of the relationship.

The final lines of the song shift perspective, as the singer imagines the partner leaving them behind. The realization that "those years passed us by" speaks to the inevitability of time passing and relationships evolving. The repeated imagery of "Running through the fields of sorrow" reinforces the emotional intensity and melancholy that permeates the song, capturing the complexities of love, loss, and moving on.

the fact that this song ends too soon is a crime

@holdenhurtuk7266

opeth has ruined me because a 3 minute song is now way too short for me

The tragic part of this song is that the vocal lines harmonize perfectly, but never meet. And that's how you build a song with a story...

@danglingondivineladders3994

Opeth make me think of autumn for some reason. They sound like autumn would sound, if it made a sound... Particularly hope leaves and harvest.
