1) The Opposition were a long running post-punk band from London, England that featured Ralph Hall, Marcus Bell and Mark Long, and mixed new wave sounds with reggae rhythms.
Founded in 1979, The Opposition released their first single on the independent record label Double Vision records. This was called "Very Little Glory" which the NME (New Musical Express) reviewed and said that it was "a song recorded before its time".
With the press picking up on the band, they switched from indie to major and secured a contract with the Ariola Record label in Europe. A single called "This Year" came out by Ariola, followed by the self produced "Breaking The Silence" album, and a French tour.
In 1984 the band signs to Virgin Records offshoot Charisma Records and released firstly "Intimacy" in 1983. The "Promises" album was released a year later, and another album called "Empire Days" the following year. On these releases the band worked with Producer Kenny Jones.
After a hiatus, when band members Marcus Bell and Mark Long recorded a more commercial sounding album under the name SO, the band regrouped and released the album "Blue Alice Blue" album, again recorded with Producer Kenny Jones. Also, a number of re-issues get the deluxe treatment with extra tracks on Virgin Records.
Although working separately (Mark in London and Marcus in France) they released two albums together: "War Begins At Home" in 1993 and "Blinder" in 2003.
Then Marcus and Mark parted their ways. Marcus Bell released new album "Love and Betrayal" in 2011 under the name The Opposition, equally Mark Long released few Albums under same band's name containing some unreleased material, demos and live tracks.
Marcus Bell died from cancer in December 2014.
Mark Long continued touring under The Opposition name and released further albums: "Somewhere In Between" in 2016 and "Hope" in 2021

Innocent
Opposition Lyrics

I have a name, I have a place
Confuse me with your communication
If you bury your head you'll get lost in the past.
THERE IS SOME CONFUSION,
WIPE THE DUST FROM MY EYES.
BUT DON'T CALL ME INNOCENT.
In the homes of millions, some of us win
Some of us lose and some of us just survive
Confuse me with your education
I wasn 't the first and I won't be the last.
BUT DON'T CALL ME INNOCENT.
In these streets I saw faces, some of them proud
And some of them still surprised
Confuse me with your contradictions
I just want to hold it, but it moves too fast.
THERE IS SOME CONFUSION,
WIPE THE DUST FROM MY EYES.
BUT DON'T CALL ME INNOCENT
The song Innocent by Opposition touches on the theme of confusion and contradictions that are present in society. The lyrics suggest that despite living in a land of plenty, there are still struggles and inequalities in people's lives. The singer acknowledges that while some may win, others may lose or just barely survive. These differences may be attributed to education and communication, which can be confusing and misleading.
The chorus "But don't call me innocent" is repeated throughout the song and is a clear indication that the singer is aware of the issues and struggles around them. They do not want to be perceived as naive or ignorant to the harsh realities of life. The lyrics indicate that the singer has seen the faces of those affected by these issues, some proud and others taken aback. The contradictions in society are confusing, but the singer wants to hold onto something, even though it moves too fast.
The song does not offer a solution, but instead, the chorus suggests that someone who is aware of the issues cannot be seen as innocent. The confusion and contradictions that are present in society have a profound impact on people's lives, and it is essential to acknowledge them. The song Innocent by Opposition paints a bleak picture of society, but it highlights the importance of being aware, even if it is uncomfortable.
