This song changed the trajectory of my life: after being disillusioned with musical theatre and losing a bit of myself, I saw this over 10 years ago. I read everything I could from Sagan, and others, and decided that I wanted to study astrophysics. 10 years later still jamming. RIP both of my favorite heroes... Cosmos saved my life and changed how I viewed the world. I pulled out of a nose dive of destructive behaviors (addiction and belief in ridiculous things we're gonna not talk about) and decided to embrace the ideas Carl and Stephen stood for. Courageous exploration of the truth with no regard for where it might lead even if it changes everything? Sign me up. I wish I had been granted a chance to tell these two men just how profoundly their books, thoughts, and lives changed me. Spreading their legacy will have to be enough.

I first found this video around 2012, in high school, when I was in the middle of asking big questions about faith, reality, the universe and my place in it. To this day I still get shivers when I hear this song and listen to Sagan and Hawking's words. My favourite line is at the end, where Sagan says the surface of the earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean ... and the water is inviting. Beautiful.

Well then you don't have time for interstellar hydrogen to collect into stars, undergo nuclear fusion to transform it into other heavier elements, the stars to go supernova, the resulting nebula to form the planet earth, the elements to combine into basic organic compounds, those organic compounds to form single celled organisms, and those single celled organisms to evolve into wheat, apples, cinnamon, chickens (for the eggs), sugar cane, etc. I suppose you could go out and buy pre-evolved apples, but then that's not really from scratch.

I listened to the Cosmos episode this was lifted from. He was trying to describe the possible view from a world well above the galactic plane. Instead of seeing a smear of stars as we see the Milky Way from within the disk the view from above the plane would get to see the full spread of the spirals.

I’d like to think of it as a possible future for humanity. A human presence that spans most of the 400 billion-or-so stars. A civilization whose exploits would utterly dwarf the grandest human exploits to the present day.

This video in particular was to me my initial step/spark of interest into pursuing my education in science back in 2012-2013. My late teens and early twenties, back when I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life and no real career aspirations. Since then, I've returned back to academia and obtained my undergraduate in chemical engineering. Worked for a few places, met some great people. Now on my way to becoming an engineer. It's been fulfilling but it was definitely a turbulent process at times. Wish all you guys the best of luck out there wishing to pursue a career related to science.

My mother used to read all of Carl Sagan’s books as a teen. She was obsessed with astrophysics.

She actually wanted to be an astrophysicist but there wasn’t the educational opportunities on my island at the time.

A less anthropocentric way of putting it would be just to change 'animal' to 'human', thus making it 'human nature'.

I didn't know much about Professor Sagan and my interest was virtually nil until I saw these videos by melodysheep - now I have Cosmos by Sagan and a wonderful picture of him smiling with worlds, stars, and the cosmic unknown in the background. Plus... I love this music! To paraphrase another of these videos, I now think a little more deeply about things and that thinking has enlightened me and with that, I have helped share wisdom with others. A decade ago myself and my friends in high school were preparing to graduate when we found this song and it absolutely changed EVERYTHING for us.

We collectively went down the rabbit hole of cosmology and discovered many fascinating individuals, theories and facts with each musical release from this channel, alongside our own independent research, of course.

10+ years later I'm watching this video again and revelling in the memories that come with each beautiful passage, recalling every event that transpired due to this channel and it's compositions. I regard this particular song as the moment in my adolescence that "changed everything, forever".

This video occupies such a strange part of my internet psyche. The outright absurd comedy of the premise of autotuning a science show into a hip hop music video is outdone by the beauty and philosophy it contains. Today I booted this up and felt so instantly relaxed watching it I didn't realize I had nearly slipped out of my chair. It's rare that I find something equal parts comically amusing, beautifully relaxing, and thought-provoking, and yet here it is in 3 minutes. Maybe it has something to do with my knowledge of Sagan himself and the beautiful mind that he had. But whatever the emotion behind it, this video is some quality stuff and I've never forgotten it, even after over a decade. Good work.
