Mean Old World
Otis Rush Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This is a mean old world, try and live it by yourself.
This is a mean old world, try and live it by yourself.
Can't get the one you love, have to use somebody else.

I've got the blues, gonna pack my things and go.
I've got the blues, gonna pack my things and go.
Guess you don't love me, babe, loving mister so-and-so.
Sometimes I wonder why can your love be so cold?

Sometimes I wonder why can your love be so cold?
I guess you don't love me, gonna pack my things and go.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Otis Rush's "Mean Old World" are about the harsh reality of life in the world. The first line sets the tone by stating that the world is "mean" and that it is not easy to live in it alone. The next line implies a sense of loneliness, saying that one cannot get the love they desire and have to resort to using somebody else. The following stanza shows that the singer is heartbroken and plans to leave, as they have become fed up with their situation. The final stanza shows the singer's despair, as they question why their love interest's feelings have become so cold towards them.

In this song, Rush conveys the anguish and pain felt by those who have their hearts broken by a lover. The lyrics are far from optimistic, painting a picture of a cruel and indifferent world. However, the song's power lies in its honesty - Rush's lyrics perfectly capture the feelings of betrayal and deception that can be so hard to deal with.

Greenwood Mills

This is how it’s done. Real blues. Pure emotion. Feel. Tone. Vocals. And a story.

Richard Busson

Clapton wishes he could sing like this!

Greenwood Mills

@Richard Busson so do Joe Bonamassa and SRV

Richard Busson

@Greenwood Mills For the blues, the white boys have proven they can handle the guitar end of things but, few can sing the blues like a Black man. Some of the Britts do an impressive job. Paul Rodgers, Paul Carrack, and Mick Hucknall can come pretty close.

Greenwood Mills

@Richard Busson they havent really proven they can handle guitar. They all rock it up, play too many notes and say nothing. No feel, no soul. Those guys you mention are rock singers. Again no soul or depth like the black blues greats.

Richard Busson

@Greenwood Mills I have to agree, blues is a black expression. It is in their blood.

touch my bones and soul awesome.
