Lucid Dream
Owl City Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am a light sleeper
But I am a heavy dreamer
My imagination gives me wings
And I can go anywhere

And when I wander away
To some other place
I'm suddenly there
Way up in the air
Where passenger trains
Catch fire and fill the sky with flames
And that black rabbit of death
Wakes up in a breath
Of beautiful dreams
My heartache, it seems
So terribly vain
Where fire and diamonds fall like rain

Do you believe
In endless miracles?
Do you believe
In the impossible?
Do you believe
Sleep is a time machine?
Do you believe
In curiosity?
Do you believe
In what you cannot see?
Do you believe
Life is a lucid dream?

And that's how you study the stars
And that's how you study the stars
And that's how you know them by heart
Life is a lucid dream

Such is the path of a dreamer
I find my way by moonlight
My imagination gives me wings
And I can go anywhere

And when I wander away
To some other place
I'm suddenly there
Way up in the air
Where passenger trains
Catch fire and fill the sky with flames
And that black rabbit of death
Wakes up in a breath
Of beautiful dreams
My heartache, it seems
So terribly vain
Where fire and diamonds fall like rain

Do you believe
In endless miracles?
Do you believe
In the impossible?
Do you believe
Sleep is a time machine?
Do you believe
In curiosity?
Do you believe
In what you cannot see?
Do you believe
Life is a lucid dream?

And that's how you study the stars
And that's how you study the stars
And that's how you know them by heart
Life is a lucid dream

And that's how you study the stars
And that's how you study the stars
And that's how you know them by heart
Life is a lucid dream

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Owl City's song Lucid Dream describe the experience of the singer as a light sleeper but a heavy dreamer. The song starts with the singer's vivid imagination that gives them wings and the power to go anywhere in their dreams. They wander away to some other place and suddenly find themselves way up in the air where passenger trains catch fire and fill the sky with flames. They also encounter the black rabbit of death, who wakes up in a breath of beautiful dreams. The singer's heartache seems so terribly vain in this dreamed-up world, where everything is surreal and extraordinary, and fire and diamonds fall like rain.

The chorus of the song asks some profound questions about belief and curiosity, such as whether one believes in endless miracles, the impossible, or life as a lucid dream. The last verse of the song returns to the opening theme of the singer's path as a dreamer. They find their way by moonlight with their imagination giving them wings as they explore otherworldly places in their dreams. The song ends with the repetition of the chorus and the line 'life is a lucid dream' that emphasizes how our dreams can feel as real as our waking life.

I think the song is about him dreaming about someone who has died so it might be about a boy or girl, but I understand what you mean. Even if it is a girl that it refers to, it’s still a respectful way to do so unlike some other songs other artists make.

@chigozie123

When I listen to owl city, I feel like stepping into my spaceship and blasting off into the cosmos to a place where time becomes meaningless, music is always present, rain sounds like guitar strings being plucked to the tune of the most peaceful melody, the sun is always smiling as it glows and the wind flows through and within your body.

If I get to this place someday, I hope and pray owl city is there with me because I want him to know that his music was not for nothing.

@strongboy7289

Me too. i feel like i'm flying across the galaxy exploring all that isn't known when i listen to his music. Its ethereal.
