The Ozark Mountain Daredevils started in 1971 in Springfield, Missouri in an attempt by the singer/songwriter members to have a vehicle in which to display and promote their music. At first, they played in bars and on porches. However, a record executive from A&M records discovered the band, and they began their recording path.
The original members of the band consisted of:
John Dillion - (vocals, guitars, mandolin, fiddle, piano, harp, autoharp, dulcimer, jawbone, percussion, keyboards)
Mike "Supe" Granda - (vocals, bass, acoustic guitar, mandolin, percussion, chicken squawks)
Buddy Brayfield - (vocals, oboe, piano, harpsichord, organ, percussion, electric piano)
Randle Chowning - (vocals, lead electric & acoustic guitars, harp, national steel, mandolin)
Steve Cash - (vocals, harp, percussion, harpsichord)
Larry Lee - (vocals, drums, acoustic guitar, synthesizer, piano, percussion, saw, saw & board)
The Daredevils peaked commercially in 1973-1974 and were best known for "Jackie Blue" and "If You Wanna Get To Heaven", which both got national coverage. However, there was a wide range of music that the Daredevils produced that was widely missed. The influences of the locale and the talents of the band members produced some unique sounds that could be related to "rockabilly" influences. There was also a good body of music that could be classified as country, rock, ballads, folk or blues.
The band changed throughout the years, but played prevantly throughout the '70s and gained and lost members during that time. To this day, there is still a loyal and avid fan following. There are discs still being released by the group, mostly of past performances in the '70s. In addition, many of the members are currently still working on other interests including Randle Chowning, Larry Lee ("Beyond Reach") Mike "Supe" Granda, and possibly others.
A reunion concert was held in Springfield, Missouri at the refurbished Gilloiz Theatre, in May of 2007. The three nights they performed were entirely sold out, weeks in advance of the concert.

well, you walked that valley's grassy floor and climbed that hilly ridge
you stood there naked stung with fear and tippy-toed on the edge
well, you swung on a vine, you crawled in the dirt and made the river your best friend
well, you went to acapella and you sang Acapulco, danced on a coin
you tied six Mexicans up in chains, then hitch-hiked to Des Moines
you put the tube in the tub when you joined a club, and took the soles off your shoes
but, baby, there's one thing you forgot to do
you got to love me
more than the trees and stars high above me
you got to love me,
love me,
love me all the time,
if you wanna be mine
(whhheeeewww....)
well, you turned my pockets inside out and my inside upside down
took fourteen reds and shaved your head and let a semi run you down
you filed your teeth and chromed your feet, shot a fifteen under par
prayed thirteen days in eighteen ways then gurued in a bar
well you slipped me a Mickey and you read James Dickey, drank up all my wine
you did all that then drowned a bat and bought a Wurlitzer on time
you ate barbecued stork with a spoon and a fork in a second-hand fun'ral plot,
but baby, there's one thing that you forgot
you got to love me
more than the trees and stars high above me
you got to love me,
love me,
love me all the time,
if you want to be mine
(MANDOLIN SOLO)
[spoken during the mandolin solo and the last chorus:]
I've been alone a long time now, and it seems like forever
It's not that I wanna be
it's just that all them things in there, together - bother me
guess it's culture
ahhhhhhhh
if you'd only come back
figure this thing out
I guess it keeps going on here
I'm runnin' outta breath, death...
you got to love me
more than the trees and stars high above me
you got to love me,
love me,
love me all the time...
The song "Journey To The Center Of Your Heart" by Ozark Mountain Daredevils is a fun and lively tune with whimsical lyrics that encourage the listener's loved one to love them as much as they have done adventurous and silly things. The song's lyrics describe the journey of the loved one, who has done everything from climbing hills and eating skunk to singing in Acapulco and hitchhiking to Des Moines. Despite all these strange and adventurous things that the loved one has done, the singer is still requesting that they love them with the same amount of passion.
Throughout the song, the singer is reminding the loved one of all the weird and wonderful things they've done, but at the end of each verse, he stresses the importance of loving him all the time if they want to be together. The last spoken words of the song hint at the loneliness of the singer, which suggests that the lyrics are a call to the loved one to return to his life and love him wholeheartedly.
