While fully supportive of the Cuban Revolution, Milanés was critical of some aspects of the Cuban regime. He took official positions but allegedly avoided participating in pro-government campaigns; on January 25, 2007, he signed a petition supporting Puerto Rico's independence from the United States of America.
A number of artists have performed with him; among them Silvio Rodríguez, Joaquín Sabina, Ana Belén, Lilia Vera, Joan Manuel Serrat, Víctor Manuel, etc. Among his songs, "Yolanda", "Yo me quedo", "Amo a esta isla", "Yo pisaré las calles nuevamente", "Para Vivir", and "El breve espacio en que no estás" are especially well-known.
Since his first recording ("Versos sencillos de José Martí" in 1973), he issued more than 40 solo records, and many more in collaboration with other artists from Cuba, elsewhere in Latin America, and Spain.
The heyday of his creativity occurred probably in the early 1980s, with his records "El guerrero", "Yo me quedo", and "Comienzo y final de una verde mañana".
Contigo en la distancia

En que pueda apartarte de mi
Ya todo parece distinto
Cuando no estas junto a mi
No hay bella melodia
En que no surjas tu
Y no quiero escucharla
Si no la escuchas tu
En parte de mi alma
Ya nada me consuela
Sino esta tú también
Más allá de tus labios
Del sol y las estrellas
Contigo en la distancia amada mia
Estoy
Pablo Milanés's song Contigo En La Distancia is about the longing for a distant loved one. The lyrics express the feeling of not being able to be separated from the person they love, where every moment seems different and incomplete when they are not by their side. The is a sense of emptiness without the loved one, as they have become an essential part of the singer's soul.
The lyrics compare the absence of the loved one to the lack of beauty in melodies without their presence. The singer does not want to listen to any music if their loved one is not there to hear it as well. The absence of the loved one affects the singer in such a way that nothing can console them except the presence of their loved one.
Overall, the song portrays the intense longing, passion, and love for a distant loved one.
