Looking Up
Paramore搀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Things are looking up, oh finally!
I thought I'd never see the day
When you smile at me.
We always pull through, oh when we try,
I'm always wrong but you're never right.
Oh you're never right!

Honestly, can you believe
We crossed the world while it's asleep?
I'd never trade it in, 'cause I've always wanted this!
And it's not a dream anymore!
No. It's not a dream anymore!
It's worth fighting for.

Could have given up so easily
I was a few cheap shots away from the end of me
Taken for granted, almost everything that I would have died for
Just yesterday,
Just yesterday

Honestly, can you believe
We crossed the world while it's asleep?
I'd never trade it in, 'cause I've always wanted this!
It's not a dream anymore!
Oh. It's not a dream anymore!
It's worth fighting for.

God knows the world doesn't need another band, (whoa, whoa!)
But what a waste it would've been! (whoa, whoa!)
I can't believe we almost hung it up (whoa, whoa!)
We're just getting started (whoa, whoa!)

Honestly, can you believe
We crossed the world while it's asleep?
I'd never trade it in, 'cause I've always wanted this!
It's not a dream anymore!
Oh. It's not a dream anymore!
It's worth fighting for.

I can't believe we almost hung it up!(whoa whoa)

We're just getting started! (whoa whoa)
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

Overall Meaning

In "Looking Up," Paramore reflects on their journey as a band and the struggles they had to overcome to get where they are today. The song celebrates a feeling of triumph and perseverance, as the band looks back on the challenges they faced and the sacrifices they made. The first verse talks about the singer finally seeing a love interest smile back at them after what seems like a long time, highlighting the positive feeling of things finally starting to look up. The second verse touches on the band's experiences touring the world while everyone else is asleep, managing to make it through despite setbacks and naysayers. The chorus reinforces the idea that their dreams have finally become a reality and that it was worth fighting for. The bridge acknowledges that the world may not need another band, but the band members would have been wasting their talent if they gave up, and it's only the beginning for them.

One of the interesting aspects of "Looking Up" is that it was co-written and produced by Howard Benson, who has worked with many famous acts such as My Chemical Romance and Three Days Grace. Another tidbit is that it was released as part of the band's 2009 album, "Brand New Eyes," which was a significant turning point for the group as they experimented with a more alternative sound. The lyrics in the chorus, "It's not a dream anymore, It's worth fighting for," inspired the title of the band's 2018 North American tour, "After Laughter Summer Tour: It's Still Not A Paranoia Tour." The song's music video features the band performing in various locations, including a desert and a forest, with members taking turns on different instruments. The video also shows flashback scenes of the band's earlier days, emphasizing the message of the song. Lead singer Hayley Williams revealed in an interview that the song was about the band's decision to stay together and not give up despite the challenges they faced. In an alternate version of the song, the line "Never trade it in, 'cause I've always wanted this!" was changed to "Never trade it in, 'cause I'm not afraid to die for this!"

Chords:
Verse: Am, F, C, G
Chorus: F, C, G, Am

Oh my, I have been following you and using your recipes for some time. I’m a Sierra Leonean and I’m so happy to watch you cook this. My family love, love cassava leaves (especially my kiddos and their American grandmother). I bet that was delicious. I was taught to add a little bit of freshly blended okra after the cassava leaves goes in. If you haven’t tried it with okra yet, please do and I’m sure you’re gonna love it.

Googsley

Yes my lady! Our nation's favourite dish! 🇸🇱 🇸🇱 🇸🇱 It can be cooked in other vegetable oils but there's nothing quite like cassava leaves cooked in palmoil for me.😋

Caroline Mangawe

Thanks for your recipes. My husband is from Sierra Leone, we add crushed okra almost at the end of the cooking process. It helps to soften the leaves as they can be tough at times.

Thanks Nanaaba . I am from Sierra Leone and this is my favorite dish. I cook it sometimes with coconut oil too....and add a little bit of okra almost at the end to soften it a little. Looks so delicious and I bet it tastes good too.
