Two little orpheans
Parton Dolly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Two little children, a boy and a girl
Sat by an old church door
The little girl's feet
Were as brown as the curl
That fell on the dress that she wore
The little boy's clothes were all tattered and torn
They shone beneath his blue eyes
"Why don't you go home
To your mommy," I said
And this was the maiden's reply
"Mommy's in heaven
Angels took her away
Left Tim and I all alone
We've no one to love us
And daddy is dead
And our darling mother is gone"

Mommy got sick
Angels took her away
To dwell in those mansions so bright
She said she would come
For her children some day
And I guess she's coming tonight
The sexton came early
To ring the church bell
And found them
Beneath the snow white

The angels made room for the orphans to dwell
Up in heaven with their mommy that night

Overall Meaning

Dolly Parton's "Two Little Orphans" tells the heartbreaking tale of two siblings, a brother and a sister, who are left alone in this world after their mother has passed away and their father has abandoned them. The opening lines set the scene of the two children sitting outside an old church, highlighting their vulnerable state as the girl's feet are described as "brown as the curl" and the boy's clothes are "all tattered and torn".

The singer tries to offer some assistance by suggesting that they go back to their mother, but the girl responds with the heartbreaking revelation that their mother has passed on and they are now all alone in this world. She speaks of their mother being taken away by angels to heaven, leaving them behind to fend for themselves. However, the girl holds onto the hope that their mother will come back for them some day, which, unfortunately, is not to be the case.

My brother and I sang this song for church gatherings when we were very young. The words of the song vary a little but the memory and tune of this song will last past my lifetime and bring enjoyment to my grandchildren. Thank you for this printing and for the memories.

I remember this song on one if my Mom's old Irish albums. Some of the lyrics on these songs were beautiful, so much so that in the days before the internet, I'd give them to girls as if they were poems I wrote just for them. This NEVER worked.

This is such a lovely song. Reminds me of "How Far Is Heaven" That Kitty Wells sang with her daughter, Darlene Wright.
