Singing in the local church choirs as a boy, studying jazz and classical piano performance, composition, and arrangement, and singing and playing keyboards in the ska band Gangster Politics in high school. Watson left the band after graduating and began to explore other types of music, including electronica and ambient. In 2002, after returning from a trip to Vietnam, he decided to start a four-piece chamber pop group, bringing in bassist Mishka Stein, drummer Robbie Kuster (both of whom he had met at university), and former Gangster Politics guitarist Simon Angell. The group (which was technically a solo project with a backing band) released Just Another Ordinary Day (2003) independently.
In 2001 Watson released his first own solo debut, Waterproof9 and in 2006 his second, Close to Paradise. Early in 2007, Watson was nominated for a Juno Canada's music award in the New Artist of the Year category.
His band's song "The Great Escape" was featured on a third-season episode of Grey's Anatomy.
He co-wrote and performed on several songs on The Cinematic Orchestra's 2007 album Ma Fleur including the opening track "To Build a Home". His "Missing You" remix of Champion's "Guy Doune", from Champion's 2006 album The Remix Album, reached #1 on CBC Radio 3's R3-30 chart in early 2007.
Patrick Watson (the band) also won the prestigeous Polaris Music Prize (Canada) in 2007.

Adventures in Your Own Backyard
Patrick Watson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Through tall green grass, and into the world
Ain't it feel right
Ain't it feel nice
In your own backyard
The dirty winding road, around your feet
That carries me along
Didn't need to go so far
You found what you were looking for
I didn't need to go so far
To find what you were looking for
Because you were always right
Just right behind
Right up ahead
You just didn't know
It was there
In your own backyard
Twelve steps in to your backyard
Just twelve steps in to your backyard
Twelve steps in to your backyard
Twelve steps in to your backyard
The lyrics of Patrick Watson's "Adventures in Your Own Backyard" talk about finding fulfillment and contentment in life by appreciating the things that are already within one's reach. The song's title refers to the idea of exploring and discovering the wonders and beauty of one's own surroundings, and not necessarily needing to travel far and wide to experience something special. The song begins with the image of walking into the backyard, which symbolizes stepping into one's own personal space, away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Through the imagery of tall green grass and winding roads, the song captures the idea of a journey or a quest for meaning, which ultimately ends in finding what one was looking for all along, in one's own backyard.
The references to "twelve steps" throughout the song suggest the idea of a 12-step program, which is typically a guide to recovering from addiction or emotional struggles. However, in this context, the "twelve steps" refer to the simple act of walking into one's own backyard, highlighting the fact that happiness and fulfillment can often be found in the most unexpected places. The repeated phrase "didn't need to go so far" further emphasizes this idea, suggesting that the answers we seek are often closer than we realize.
Overall, "Adventures in Your Own Backyard" is a song about finding peace, happiness, and fulfillment by embracing the things that are already within one's reach, and recognizing the beauty that can be found in everyday life.
