Till We Meet Again
Patti Page and Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu
When the clouds roll by, I'll come to you
Then the skies will seem more blue
Down in lovers lane, my dearie

Wedding bells will ring so merrily
Every tear will be a memory
So wait and pray each night for me
Till we meet again

So wait and pray each night for me
Till we meet again

Till we meet again

Down in lover's lane
Wait and pray each night for me

Overall Meaning

The first two lines of the song, "Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu, When the clouds roll by, I'll come to you" suggests that the lovers want to make the farewell moment less painful and uncomfortable by smiling.

The second half of the song talks about the hope that endures in the heart of the lovers as they look forward to meeting again someday soon. The lyrics speak of a time when the skies will seem more blue, and wedding bells will ring so merrily, indicating an impending reunion. The lines "So wait and pray each night for me, Till we meet again" emphasize the strong connection and commitment between the two lovers. The song ends with a repetition of the line "Till we meet again," signifying the resolve of the lovers to reunite after the separation.

There's a song in the land of the lily,
Each sweetheart has heard with a sigh,
Over high garden walls, this sweet echo falls,
As a soldier whispers goodbye.
Though goodbye means the birth of a teardrop,
Hello means the birth of a smile.
And the smile will erase the tear blighting trace,
When we meet in the after a while:
Smile the while you kiss me sad adieu,
When the clouds roll by, I'll come to you,
Then the skies will seem more blue
Down lovers' lane, my dearie,
Wedding bells will sing so merrily
Every tear will be a memory,
So wait and pray each night for me
'Til we meet again.

That's one of the benefits of growing old - you can wake up with a song from 70 years ago playing in your memory!

My dad taught me and my sister this song and I sang it to my children when they were babies, and I sing this lullaby to my grandbabies to sleep. Reminds me of my dad. He sang this song and would sing the sing "till we meet again" right after. I sing both songs as lullabies.

My grandfather was a musician and singer in a time this song was popular. He met a young woman (my grandmother) at a dance he was playing. That night he took his band and serenaded her with this song. He asked her to marry and she told him to go home and read Ruth in his bible. He found her answer there and they spent their honeymoon in Seven Springs North Carolina where her often played music. He taught me this song and I sing it often at my performances. It sitll brings a tear Ed Terry.
