Black Hole Sun
Paul Anka Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In my eyes
Indisposed
In disguise
As no one knows
Hides the face
Lies the snake
The sun
In my disgrace
Boiling heat
Summer stench
'Neath the black
The sky looks dead
Call my name
Through the cream
And I'll hear you
Scream again

Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come?
Won't you come?

Stuttering
Cold and damp
Steal the warm wind
Tired friend
Times are gone
For honest men
And sometimes
Far too long
For snakes
In my shoes
A walking sleep
And my youth
I pray to keep
Heaven send
Hell away
No one sings
Like you
Anymore

Hang my head
Drown my fear
'Til you all just
Disappear

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Paul Anka's song Black Hole Sun are full of vivid and evocative imagery that suggest themes of depression and desperation. The opening lines, "In my eyes, indisposed / In disguise, as no one knows," suggest that the singer is struggling to conceal their emotional turmoil, perhaps even from themselves. The "snake" referenced in the third line may be a metaphor for deceit or malice, lurking beneath the surface of the singer's persona.

The second verse paints a bleak picture of summer, with "boiling heat" and a "summer stench" that seems to exacerbate the singer's feelings of discomfort and alienation. The reference to the "black" sky also reinforces a sense of doom and despair. The chorus, with its repeated refrain of "Black hole sun, won't you come / And wash away the rain," further underscores this mood.

The third verse establishes a sense of weariness and resignation, with the singer feeling trapped in a cycle of "walking sleep" and clinging to memories of youth. The final lines, "Hang my head / Drown my fear / 'Til you all just disappear," suggest a desire to escape or somehow be freed from this overwhelming sense of despair.

Overall, the lyrics to Black Hole Sun suggest a deep and abiding sense of hopelessness, with the singer struggling to maintain their facade of normalcy even as they feel themselves being pulled deeper into a psychic void.

This great rendition epitomises how truly great a piece of songwriting Black Hole sun is. Miss you Chris.

@slaphead8835

Well said. It’s a strong and beautiful piece of music and Mr. Anka’s respectful rendition of this wonderful tune is literally wonderful.

@jmferris1138

at first I thought "I beg your pardon?" However, it's Mr. Anka's interpretation of this song. Soundgarden makes it rock, Paul Anka makes it swing. Thank God there is room in this world for both versions to exist.

@veggiet2009

and now Postmodern Jukebox's version. Honestly I don't know which version i like better, this one is more laid back, but that one has Haley's vocals and violins.

@Tmanaz480

jmferris1138 ... the fact that it works in two such diverse arrangements shows that the song has "good bones". RIP Chris C.

@joseventurausmc

I just saw that Chris had told BBC that this was one of his favorite versions of the song.

@williamknell864

Well put.

@Vajrabrother

"Thank God there is room (space) in this world for both versions "
Hmmm, it seems that room or space is always within a mind or soul allowing it !
Possibly you have this room or space(iousness) !?
Well , Paul can ("still") sing .... and I like his mellow rendition ..... or am not with the swing !! (it seems to jumpy or "uppity" in contrast to the lyrical content !)

One thing I am impressed with Anka on. He takes these songs, and actually makes them sound like they came from that era. I don't know how he did it. If your not paying attention, you might not even know and just think it was from way back when.

@zeejustin6

it honestly had me fooled for a bit, and i was a big black hole sun soundgarden guy back in 1994, haha. Patheticness on my part, mostly.
