Gilbert composes music in a wide variety of styles including pop, rock, metal, blues, jazz, funk and classical, but is perhaps best known for his versatility and speed. His guitar work is characterised by his floating right hand contrary to the more common anchored right hand that guitarists like Pink Floyd's David Gilmour favour. He is also considered to be one of the best proponents of alternate picking.
Paul once had his own column in British guitar magazine, Total Guitar. He is sometimes a guest lecturer at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) that he once attended, along with Gary Hoey and many other guitar players. He works a great deal with GIT's division in Japan, where he lived for a time before relocating to Los Angeles, CA.
Get It

But she still don't get it
She could travel all the western world
But she still won't get it
It takes more than a mind to know
Any body will tell you so
But she won't let me in
Even though it's a sin to forget it
Could it be that she would prefer her we
Without me in it
I would understand if another man
Was around to win it
Did the last one leave her cold
Will the mystery unfold
Leaves me wonderin' why
No I can't even try to forget it
Yeah, I knew that it wouldn't be easy
But that don't stop me from trying
And if I said I could just forget you
I'd be lying
My persistence paid, last night she stayed
And we finally made it
The surprise I found is she's been around
And her heart is jaded
I was blinded by my dream
Sometimes things ain't what they seem
Now, I must confess
That I think it's best we forget it
There I said it
Don't regret it
The song "Get It" by Paul Gilbert tells the story of a man who is trying to win the heart of a woman who is both intelligent and elusive. The first two lines set the stage for the song, as the singer describes the woman as "smarter than your average girl" but also unable to "get it". The precise nature of what she cannot understand is left unclear, but the suggestion is that she may not know how to connect with other people on an emotional level. The singer professes his love for her, but finds himself frustrated by her reluctance to open up to him.
The singer tries to come to terms with the possibility that the object of his affection may simply prefer a life without him. He wonders if she might be more comfortable with another man, and muses on the possibility that he has competition for her heart. He questions whether she has been hurt in the past, and whether that might be why she resists his advances. Despite his own doubts, the singer remains determined to win her over, promising that he will not give up on their romance.
In the end, the singer is successful in winning the woman's affections. However, he is also surprised to discover that she has been involved with other men in the past, and that her heart is "jaded". He realizes that his idealized vision of her was not entirely accurate, and ultimately decides that it is best for both of them to let go of their relationship.
