Band On The Run
Paul McCartney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stuck inside these four walls
Sent inside forever
Never seeing no one
Nice again like you
Mama you, mama you

If I ever get out of here
Thought of giving it all away
To a registered charity
All I need is a pint a day
If I ever get outta here
If we ever get out of here

Well, the rain exploded with a mighty crash
As we fell into the sun
And the first one said to the second one there
I hope you're having fun

Band on the run, band on the run
And the jailer man and sailor Sam
Were searching every one
For the band on the run
Band on the run
For the band on the run
Band on the run

Well, the undertaker drew a heavy sigh
Seeing no one else had come
And a bell was ringing in the village square
For the rabbits on the run

Band on the run
Band on the run
And the jailer man and sailor Sam
Were searching every one
For the band on the run
Band on the run

Yeah, the band on the run
The band on the run
Band on the run, hey
Band on the run

Well, the night was falling as the desert world
Began to settle down
In the town they're searching for us everywhere
But we never will be found

Band on the run
Band on the run
And the county judge who held a grudge
Will search for evermore
For the band on the run
The band on the run

Band on the run, yeah
Band on the run, yeah

Overall Meaning

"Band on the Run" is a song that was written by Paul McCartney and released by Wings, his band, in 1973. The song is about a prison escape and is told from the perspective of one of the prisoners. The first verse is a reflection on the bleak and hopeless circumstances the prisoner is in. He is stuck inside the four walls of a prison cell, with no hope of ever leaving. However, he thinks about his mother and how he wishes he could see her again.

In the chorus, the prisoner reveals his desire to escape. He dreams of giving everything away to charity and being able to leave his miserable life behind. He hopes that one day he will be able to escape and live a better life outside the prison walls. The second verse describes the actual prison break. The rain pours down as the prisoners escape, and they are pursued by the jailer and sailor Sam. They are now the band on the run.

The third verse describes the aftermath of the escape. The undertaker is disappointed that his services are not needed, as the prisoners have escaped. The last verse is more optimistic, as the prisoners have evaded capture and are now free. However, there is still a sense of danger, as the county judge is still looking for them.
