Seagull
Paul Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Seagull, you fly across the horizon
Into the misty morning sun
Nobody asked you where you are going
Nobody knows where you're from

Here is a man asking the question
Is this really the end of the world
Seagull you must have known for a long time
The shape of things to come
Now you fly through the sky
Never asking why, and you fly
All around till somebody shoots you down

Da-da-da-down, mmm, mmm

Now you seagull you fly, seagull you fly away
And you'll fly away today

And you'll fly away tomorrow
And you'll fly away, leave me to my sorrow

Overall Meaning

The song SEAGULL by Paul Rodgers talks about the beauty of a seagull in flight and how it seems to fly aimlessly with no clear direction. The lyrics use this image of a seagull to make a broader statement about life and its uncertain nature. Just like the seagull flies without any clear purpose or destination, human beings often find themselves wandering through life, never knowing where they are going or where they are from. The song captures a sense of melancholy and longing as the singer watches the seagull fly away, leaving him with his sorrow.

As the lyrics continue, the song takes on a darker tone, hinting at the fragility of life and the inevitability of death. The singer wonders if this is the end of the world, suggesting that he is feeling overwhelmed and disheartened by the challenges he is facing. The seagull, with its ability to soar high above the earth, seems to have a better perspective on things. It has always known, the singer suggests, the shape of things to come, implying that it has a deeper understanding of the world and its workings than humans do.

Overall, SEAGULL is a melancholy but ultimately hopeful song that reminds us to embrace the mystery and uncertainty of life, even when it leaves us feeling lost and alone.

Hi Ken Harrington
Your words of not been given credit....My would be underrated but I find most underrated
Singers are the best.
They don't won't the bright lights and bull shit that goes with fame if you hear him
in interviews he likes the simple life and has his own thoughts on life.
I was in a bar in Thailand it was 3 a m and they had the Beatles on this guy was
saying how good they were.
I said they were good but in my opinion paul Roger's was the period of 65 to 74
was the best time.
By the way the guy in the bar said who is Paul Roger's lol....I paid the bill and left.

"It's the simple life I crave." Spoken from a man that is a rock superstar, yet absolutely grounded in reality. That is rare quality....

@kiat1954

Well said Chris, a very rare quality indeed. Whenever I hear him sing it makes me think hard and stops me in my tracks, not many people can have that affect on someone's mind.

@canadianroot

His voice hasn't lost even a shred of its legendary power and soul over the years. One of the best singers ever.

@TrueIronMaidenFan

for my money him and Bruce Dickinson are the best singers of all time! I wish Paul Rodgers was the singer for Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Queen!
