Desafinado
Paulo Jobim Lyrics

E sempre vêm a mesma queixa
Eu possuo apenas o que Deus me deu
No fundo do peito, bate calado
No fundo do peito, bate calado
É que no peito dos desafinados
Também bate um coração
In the song Desafinado, Paulo Jobim sings about being criticized for his singing by someone he loves who thinks he can’t sing in tune. He acknowledges that his lover is beautiful, but even her beauty can deceive her into thinking that he can’t sing. He confesses that it hurts him when she tells him that he sings out of tune because only those with a privileged ear like hers can hear the difference. He reminds her that he only has what God gave him.
Paulo further explains that his behavior might not fit her classification of musicality, but it is natural and conforms to the spirit of bossa nova. He then reveals to her that even the tone-deaf have a heart, and that she cannot call his love any less than the best there is. In the end, he points out that while she is absorbed in her music, she has forgotten the most crucial element, which is that the tone-deaf have a heart and can feel emotions just like everyone else.
The song depicts how the singer has come to terms with the fact that he cannot sing well, regardless of his love for music. Despite receiving criticism for his vocal ability, he argues that music goes beyond technicality and represents the deepest feelings in one’s heart. He also acknowledges that the tone-deaf are not inferior in any way as they have hearts that beat like everyone else.
