Hail Hail
Pearl Jam Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ah, is there room for both of us?
Both of us apart?
Are we bound out of obligation?
Is that all we've got?
I get the words, and then I get to thinkin'
I don't wanna think, I wanna feel
And how do I feel?
And how do I
If you're the only one, will I never be enough?
Hail, hail the lucky ones, I refer to those in love
Swore I'd love you till the day I die, and beyond..
Are we going to the same place? if so, can I come?
It's egg rolling thick and heavy
All the past you carry
Oh, I could be new, you underestimate me
If you're the only one, will I never be enough?
Hail, hail the lucky ones, I refer to those in love
I sometimes realize I could only be as good as you'll let me
Are you woman enough to be my man?
Bandaged hand in hand
I find it on the run in a race that can't be won
All hail the lucky ones, I refer to those in love
If you're my only one, so could you only one?

I want to be your one, enough
You won, your one, your hun

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Pearl Jam's song Hail Hail have a lot of depth and meaning. The song revolves around the idea of a complicated relationships and questioning whether there is enough room for both parties. The opening lines suggest a feeling of distance and separation, but also a sense of obligation that could be keeping them together. The singer questions if obligation is all they have, and wants to feel more than that. He expresses a desire to connect and not just be bound to the relationship.

The chorus provides a bit of hope and optimism, as it praises those "lucky ones" who have found love. The singer had previously pledged his love to his partner, and questions if they are also headed in the same direction. Despite the emotional weight of the lyrics, there is a feeling of hope and possibility towards the end of the song. The singer seems to be willing to put in the work to make the relationship work, and realizes that they may need to push themselves to become a better partner.

Overall, the song Hail Hail is about the complexities of relationships and the desire to find meaningful connections. The lyrics grapple with themes of obligation, love, and commitment, while also acknowledging the challenges that come with these emotions.

Dudes, Matt Cameron is one of the greatest rock drummers in the last 30 years. Is his playing with Soundgarden more exemplary and pardigm-shifting than it is in Pearl Jam? Yes. But he's been in Pearl Jam for over 20 years(longer than any other drummer) now and has written some of their best songs. Get over it.
