You Can Depend on Me
Peggy Lee Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Though you say we're through, I'll always love you
And you can depend on me
Though someone you've met has made you forget
You know, you can count on me

I wish you success, loads of happiness
But I must confess, I'll be lonely
If you need a friend, I'm yours till the end
And you can depend on me

You know, you can depend on me
And you can depend on me

I wish you success, loads of happiness
But I must confess, I'm gonna be lonely
If you need a friend, I'm yours till the end
And you can depend on me

You know you can count on me

Overall Meaning

The song "You Can Depend on Me" by Peggy Lee is a poignant expression of love and support in the face of a breakup. The lyrics describe the singer's unwavering devotion to her former partner, despite the fact that they have gone their separate ways. The opening line of the song, "Though you say we're through, I'll always love you," sets the tone for the rest of the song, which is a declaration of the singer's enduring love and loyalty.

In the chorus, the singer assures her ex-partner that they can always count on her. She acknowledges that someone new has come into their life, but nonetheless promises to be there for them as a friend. The second verse of the song reveals the singer's personal struggle with loneliness and sadness, but she remains steadfast in her commitment to her former partner, saying, "If you need a friend, I'm yours till the end."

The song is a poignant reminder that love doesn't always end with a happily-ever-after, and that true love means being there for someone even when things don't work out the way we hope they will.
