Penguin Prison Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They got everything they want
They got nothing, they got nothing
Someone's got everything they need
They got everything they want
They got nothing, no, nothing
They got everything they want
They got nothing, they got nothing
Someone's got everything they need
They got everything they want
They got nothing, no, nothing
Someone's got everything they need
They got everything they want
They got everything they want
They got everything they need
Someone's got everything I want
They got everything I need
They got nothing, they got nothing
In Penguin Prison's song "Someone Got Everything," the lyrics convey a sense of envy and unfulfillment towards someone who seemingly has everything they need and want. The repetition of the lines "Someone's got everything they need/They got everything they want/They got nothing, they got nothing" juxtaposes the idea that although this person has all that they want and need, they still have "nothing." This suggests that material possessions and fulfillment do not necessarily go hand in hand. The chorus also implies a frustration that the singer is feeling, as they are unable to achieve what the other person has acquired.
The line "Someone's got everything I want/They got everything I need" exemplifies the feeling of envy that the singer is experiencing towards this other person, and the repetition of the same three lines at the end gives the impression of the singer trying to convince themselves that they too have everything they need, despite the lack of fulfillment they feel.
Overall, "Someone Got Everything" communicates a mixture of envy, frustration, and an underlying message that serves as a reminder that material possessions aren't everything, and the need to achieve happiness through other means.
