Worse It Gets
Penguin Prison Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm sorry
I'll send a photograph
I never think of anything
Until the moment?s already passed
I can't be patient
I don't think it?s working
I haven?t noticed yet
The more I look the worse it gets
The worse it gets, the worse it gets
The more I look the more I look the worse it gets
I got a car that I call Jenny
I take her out when there?s too much noise in my head
She?s always there to take me anywhere
Just the same way we do it again
I'm wide-awake and never sleep
Don?t worry
I can't control myself
Don?t wanna make another scene
Just wanna become someone else
I can?t decide on anything important
Don?t tell me I'll forget
I've seen my face too many times
The more I look the worse it gets
The worse it gets, the worse it gets
The more I look the more I look the worse it gets
In this song, Penguin Prison (aka Chris Glover) sings about his own struggles with anxiety and confusion in the modern world. The first verse explores how he is always running late and missing important moments, as well as feeling guilty about it. He admits to being absorbed in technology and the screen, which only worsens his sense of disconnection and detachment from the world around him. He can't seem to find his way in life and feels overwhelmed by the decisions he needs to make.
In the chorus, Glover repeats the refrain "the worse it gets" as a reflection of his increasing anxiety and paranoia consuming him. He feels trapped and unable to escape the inner turmoil. In the second verse, he talks about his car "Jenny" as a coping mechanism to help him deal with his racing thoughts. However, he also admits to struggling with self-control and wanting to reinvent himself.
Overall, "The Worse It Gets" is a confession of sorts from Glover, detailing his own struggles with mental health and feeling out of sync with the world. The lyrics provide a sharp observation of our society's increasing obsession with technology, as well as the overwhelming feeling many of us experience in the face of endless choices and information.
