The members are Scott Hoying (baritone lead/harmony), Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo-soprano lead/harmony), Mitch Grassi (counter-tenor lead/harmony), Kevin Olusola (tenor/ percussion), and Matt Sallee (bass). Avi Kaplan was formerly a member of the group; he was replaced by Sallee in 2017. Their work, mostly in, but not limited to, the pop music style, consists of covers of pre-existing songs and some original material, sometimes in the form of medleys. Their music is defined by their own arrangement style, a strong presence of low bass vocals, and a diverse range of vocal percussion.

Pentatonix formed in 2011 and came to prominence the same year by winning the third season of "The Sing-Off" on NBC, their victory earning them $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony. Their debut EP "PTX, Volume 1" was released in 2012, followed by "PTXmas" the same year, with their third release "PTX, Vol. II", debuting at number 1 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart in 2013. 2014 saw the release of "PTX, Vol. III", and their two first full-length albums "PTX, Vols. 1 & 2" (a compilation of Vol. 1 and Vol. II) and "That's Christmas to Me". Their second holiday release, That's Christmas to Me, with the album certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), platinum on December 24, 2014, and double platinum on February 11, 2016, becoming the highest-charting holiday album by a group since 1962, and the fourth-best-selling album in the United States in 2014. The following year, Pentatonix released their album, their first consisting mostly of original material, which debuted atop the US Billboard 200 chart for the first time in their career, followed by a third Christmas album, A Pentatonix Christmas, in 2016, and a new EP, PTX, Vol. IV – Classics, the following year. In May 2017, Kaplan announced that he would leave Pentatonix due to his inability to keep up with the touring demands of the group; he left after the completion of the tour in September, and was replaced by Matt Sallee the following month.

Pentatonix has won three Grammy Awards: they were the first a cappella act to win Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella, doing so in 2015 and 2016, and Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2017.

Pentatonix started their popular YouTube channel back in 2012 to promote themselves after the Sing-Off (Season 3, 2011) when they were dropped by their record label, according to a recent November 2014 interview. They also made effective use of social media to interact with their fan base. They have eclipsed almost 15 million subscribers and more than 2.7 billion cumulative views. Their music video for "Daft Punk" recently surpassed 273 million views.

Two years ago, my choir director gathered a small group of her most talented choir members and created an experimental a capella group. We were kept a complete secret from the rest of the choirs, when we had to meet after school to rehearse, we would be listed simply as, "Ensemble."

What song did our director choose to be the very first song we performed? This one, of course. Our first performance was one I've promised myself to never forget. The cheers from the audience, the pride in our director's eyes as she lifted and lowered her arms, guiding us through the song, and most of all, how connected we all were on that stage. It was perfect.

The group was just an experiment. There was no telling whether or not we would perform ever again.

But now, here I am, one of the only original members left in the school, revisiting the song that started it all. Ever since that performance, we've been offered chances to perform outside of school on multiple occasions, we have our own special jackets, we've been offered the chance to perform America's national anthem on live television, and our group has been given a name. We are the Encores. And as long as I live, I will never forget the small group of people who started something beautiful.

They're like my family, and I couldn't be happier to have known them.

This song... It's so beautiful, it has so many emotions and so much meaning to me. It's the fact that it is just their voices, nothing else. No back track, no beatboxing, just purely their voices. Just singing, and singing together. I know that the lyrics came completely from the heart and soul. I just discovered this while listening to the PTX playlist on Youtube. My Mom passed in March of this year, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. I cared for her for 10 yrs and she died at home and I'm haunted by her death. This song perfectly expresses the night she died.. I want to thank you guys for it. You need to do MORE of this kind of music. All singing, no fluff, bubble gum pop standards. Good tight, excellent harmony! You shine so much better in these types of songs. I would love for you to tackle some good choral songs like from Arvo Part or Eric Whitacre. That would just be awesome.

I assume you understand the concept of Supply and Demand? It still counts for music... The money is where the listeners are, which shows that either 1: People are ignorant or 2: This kind of music is not as popular as the pop industry and it's more of a niché market. Both are valid points.

We sang this in my choir. The emotion you feel when everyone is 110% is breathtaking. You feel every harmony and when the basses drop and the melody moves so do you. Literally such an amazing experience learning and singing this song. I sang as a soprano and literally by the end of the shackles part I was in tears. This song makes you think about so many things in life...

You just cant get better than this. Music on the radio is fun and catchy, but when you strip everything away and make almighty music with just voices...it touches something in the human psyche that makes you hold your breath. Your facial expressions mirror the emotions. Just voices. And 5 people that really grasp the notion of soft power. You hang on every word and note til the end. PTX is just the pinnacle of vocal music. Period. Fav song. No question.

I also have an accapella group separate from the main choir I'm in and we also performed this song. The memories you share from learning this song and performing it are really ones that you don't want to loose. Right now I'm also the only original member being there for 3 years while everyone else dropped out or went to highschool. Though are accapella group wasn't a secret, it's a really big achievement.

It's because he is singing along with the melody in this song. In most songs he usually sings a counterpoint bass line (which is basically like the short notes from an upright bass). Those lines tend to give way to the melody

Beautifully done...almost hymnlike...solemn and poignant. A heart, broken but not dead. A prayer, a belief, a promise. A choir with no instruments but those they were born with. This is a symphony without a single instrument... only voices, hearts and love. I lost the best man I ever knew, years ago and this lovely song speaks to my heart and my loss. I know he is in heaven, waiting for me, and every day my heart longs for him just a little bit more. Will he finally see me then? Can he look beyond my flaws and finally see the woman who loves him with all her heart and soul? God I hope so.

I sang in an a cappella quartet while in college and the love of that type of singing has stayed with me over the years. I am now 90 and I am a huge fan of Pentatonix, but I always go back to this rendition of Smile. Absolute perfection.

My marching band played this song for my sophomore year. The beginning was a quintet of players, and I was chosen to play Avi's part on the Sousaphone. We practiced for hours every week, working on balance and harmonies between us, and it was quite possibly the most beautiful moment of the entire show. I'll never forget the friends I played this with.
