George had a hat
but it wasn't where it wasn't at

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Pere Ubu's song "George Had A Hat" are intriguing and open to interpretation. One possible interpretation could be that the "hat" symbolizes something that someone possesses, but it is not where it should be. This could represent a feeling of loss or displacement, where someone has lost a part of themselves or something they hold dear. The repetition of the phrase "wasn't where it wasn't at" creates a sense of confusion and disorientation, which could represent the struggle of trying to find what is missing.

Another interpretation could be that the song is a commentary on society's norms and expectations. The line "George had a hat" could represent the idea that everyone is expected to have a certain possession or conform to a certain standard. The fact that the hat is not where it should be could symbolize the rebellion against these expectations and the desire to be free from societal norms. The confusion and disorientation in the lyrics could represent the difficulty in navigating this path of non-conformity.

Overall, "George Had A Hat" is a mysterious and thought-provoking song that leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

This is one of my favorite Ubu songs. It's simultaneously powerful and hilarious. The repetitive silly refrain intoned as though something epic is being conveyed, Thomas's desperate and wild trombone splats and howls, Ravenstine's frantic synthesizer and soprano sax moaning, the catchy guitar riff and the wonderful, expert, high energy work of drummers Krauss and Cutler. I can't figure out why it's not considered one of Ubu's most memorable pieces.

When CAKE released their first rekkid, with John McCrea tossing in random "Alright," and "Okay..." in several tunes, I knew immediately where he got that. Right here.
