Pernett is currently at a new level in his music and this is evident in 'El Mago'. For the first time we get to see what a talented artist he truly is. Apart from composing, producing, mixing and singing , he also recorded the traditional instruments such as percussions, maracas, gaita an guache. All of this without leaving behind his twisted electronic beats, full of synthesizers and special effects.
Humberto Pernett grew up in the midst of Barranquilla's famous carnival atmosphere. Since early childhood he was captivated by music, and curiosity made him his own teacher. At age 9 he was making music with a tape recorder, a guitar and a Casiotonebank CTK 120. This musical experiences shaped Pernett’s own rhythms and styles: folklore produced with electronic instruments.
At age 18 he moved to Bogota to study music, and it is here his career really takes off!! While working on his first album he meets English producer Richard Blair, and is invited to make part of Sidestepper, Colombia¹s most international world music group. Pernett has widely toured with Sidestepper in USA,Mexico, Canada and Europe.
Pernett , the producer, has been busy making music for many years now. The first result of his broad musical experience was ‘Musica Pa Pick Up’ EP (Sony, 2004). Two big hits came out in this work: ‘Huele a Mariacachafa’ and ‘Caribbean Raver’. after an extensive european tour promoting his first EP, he then co-produces with Richard Blair “Cumbia Galactica” EP(2006),
In 2008 he released his first full album “Arbol”, a ground breaking album with collaborations from Visitante Calle 13, son Palenque, Sergio Arias from Malalma y Tostao from Chocquibtown.
These three releases are considered important exponents of new Colombian music. With 'El Mago' Pernett s as a natural leader of this modern urban folklore, breaking barriers and experimenting with new elements.
“Humberto Pernett is a maker of vibrant Caribbean rhythms. Spycing them up with the exact dose of Electronic elements. To top it all off he owns a very peculiar voice, with a typical accent of Colombia’s Northern coast, and an original diversity in its tones. His carnaval, party mood invites you to dance immediately. With this characteristics he has gained an important space in the current Colombian music scene.” ROLLING STONE “EL CHAMPETERO ORIGINAL” by Daniel Casas Oct.2008
“Colombia’s rejuvenated Cumbia scene is entertaining dancefloors from Bogota to London...Pernett takes the stage.. a bassline from Berlin, a kick drum from Chicago, and a load of kit you’ve never seen before from Barranquilla, with flutes, cornets and weird reed instruments crashing through the mix. The crowd start to dance and as a sinous insistent bassline wraps itself around the rig, Pernett swings his hips like Travolta meeting a carnival queen, his vast, natural afro bobbing to the cumbia rhythm” THE BIG ISSUE, “COLOMBIAN BLEND” by Michael Powers Nov.10-16, 2008 UK
“Humberto Pernett’s last name has become a symbol of Colombia’s musical renewal.” SHOCK “EL FOLCLOR PROGRESIVO DE PERNETT” Sept. 2008

Pernett Lyrics

Mama gallo
Me estas mamando gallo pa' pagarme
Mama gallo
El indio esta mareado
Vamos a entonar, vamos a entonar
Con el bailecito de moda
El baile del indio
Le bailaron el indio
Mama gallo
Mama gallo
El baile del indio
Le bailaron el indio
El baile del indio
Le bailaron el indio
Oye que pena contigo mi rey
Data una vueltecita
Pero hasta cuando men
Estas mamando gallo pa' pagarme
Mama gallo mama gallo
The lyrics to Pernett's song "El Baile Del Güevatronik" contain a mixture of playful language and social commentary. The repeated phrase "Mama gallo" can be interpreted as a colloquial expression meaning "hold on" or "wait a minute." This sets the tone for the rest of the song, where the singer addresses someone who is challenging or teasing them. The use of the word "gallo" can also be understood as a symbol of pride or masculinity, adding a layer of symbolism to the lyrics.
The phrase "Me estas mamando gallo pa' pagarme" suggests a sense of frustration or annoyance towards someone who is stalling or making excuses. The singer is urging the other person to stop playing games and to fulfill their obligations or debts. This could be seen as a reflection of the struggles and power dynamics that exist in social interactions, where one person may try to assert dominance or control over another.
The mention of the indio feeling dizzy and the call to join in the latest dance craze highlights the theme of cultural identity and societal trends. The reference to the indio, a term often used to describe indigenous people in Latin America, may symbolize a sense of disorientation or alienation within modern society. By encouraging participation in a popular dance, the lyrics suggest a desire for unity and solidarity, bridging traditional and contemporary cultural practices.
Overall, "El Baile Del Güevatronik" can be interpreted as a commentary on power dynamics, cultural identity, and social interactions. Through its playful language and rhythmic flow, the song conveys a message of resilience and defiance in the face of challenges. The repeated refrain of "Mama gallo" serves as a rallying cry, urging listeners to stand their ground and assert themselves in the face of adversity.
