I'll Be Home for Christmas
Perry Como Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree!
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams!
Perry Como's song "I'll Be Home for Christmas" begins with the singer reassuring his loved ones that he will be returning home for Christmas, providing them with a sense of comfort and joy. This is a common sentiment during Christmas time, as travel and reunions with family and friends are often associated with the holiday. The second line of the first verse, "You can plan on me," emphasizes the singer's commitment to coming home and his loved ones' ability to rely on him.
The second verse, however, reveals a sense of longing and a recognition that the singer may not actually be able to physically be with his loved ones on Christmas. He sings of the love light gleaming, perhaps referencing a sense of warmth and happiness that he associates with being with his loved ones during the holiday. However, the final line "If only in my dreams" introduces a sense of heartbreak and sadness, acknowledging that sometimes it's not always possible to be physically present with those we love during Christmas.
Overall, the song is a bittersweet reminder of the importance of spending time with loved ones during the holiday season, and the pain and longing that can come with being separated from them.
