They Can't Take That Away from Me
Perry Como Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The way you wear your hat,
The way you sip your tea,
The memory of all that,
No, no! They can't take that away from me!

The way your smile just beams,
The way you sing off-key,
The way you haunt my dreams,
No, no! They can't take that away from me!

We may never, never, meet again,
On the bumpy road to love,
Still, I'll always, always, keep the memory of

The way you you hold your knife,
The way we danced 'till three,
The way you changed my life,
No, no! They can't take that away from me!
No, they can't take that away from me!

The way you you hold your knife,
The way we danced 'till three,
The way you changed my life,
No, no! They can't take that away from me!
No, they can't take that away,

'Cause I think you're here to stay,
No, they can't take that away, from me!

Overall Meaning

“They Can’t Take That Away from Me” is a poignant tune that was written by George and Ira Gershwin and popularized by Perry Como in 1959. The lyrics revolve around the idea that no matter what happens, nobody can take away the memories and emotional connections that were formed between two people. In the first verse, the way the person wears their hat and sips their tea are irreplaceable memories that nobody can take away. In the second verse, it is the smile, singing voice, and haunting presence in dreams that will always remain special. The bridge expresses that while the journey of love may be tumultuous and unpredictable, the memories and emotions will always endure. Finally, the last verse brings it back to the physical attributes of the person such as the way they hold their knife or the way they danced until three in the morning.

The lyrics of the song were written by Ira Gershwin after George had passed away in 1937. Despite the circumstances in which the lyrics were written, Ira considered “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” to be his finest work as a lyricist. In fact, in a 1982 interview with New York Times, Ira Gershwin stated that "I think it's the best lyric I ever wrote," he said. "Of course there are many others that have degrees of emotion aroused in me, but this is one that gets me every time."

I have to go with Sinatra's big band version, but this has a nice easy sound to it that I do enjoy.
