When I Fall in Love
Perry Como Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It will be forever,
Or I'll never fall in love
In an restless world like this is,
Love is ended before it's begun,
And too many moonlight kisses,
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun
When I give my heart,
It will be completely,
Or I'll never give my heart
And the moment I can feel that
You feel that way too,
Is when I fall in love with you
Or I'll never give my heart
And the moment I can feel that
You feel that way too,
Is when I fall in love with you
The verses of Perry Como's classic song "When I Fall In Love" express a profound understanding of human relationships. The opening line, "When I fall in love, it will be forever, or I'll never fall in love," reflects the singer's belief that love is not something to be taken lightly. He recognizes how fragile love can be in a world of transience and uncertainty, where many people are reluctant to commit to anything that might involve risk or sacrifice. Love, the singer suggests, is something that requires total commitment, wholehearted devotion, and unshakable faith.
The next two verses depict the dangers of a world where love is fleeting and superficial. "In a restless world like this is, love is ended before it's begun, / And too many moonlight kisses seem to cool in the warmth of the sun." Here, moonlight kisses represent the transient pleasures of romance that can be quickly extinguished by the harsh light of day. In contrast, the singer suggests that real love requires a deep emotional connection and a willingness to embrace the unknown.
The final verses express the singer's determination to give himself wholeheartedly to another person, but only if that person reciprocates his feelings. "When I give my heart, it will be completely, / Or I'll never give my heart. / And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too, / Is when I fall in love with you." These verses emphasize the importance of mutuality in love, the idea that both partners must be equally committed to each other for a genuine connection to exist.
