Was It Worth It?
Pet Shop Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I don't know why I was dreaming about you
But I do know that I was dancing without you
Then you smiled, and I was lost
You fall in love, why count the cost?

All I gave to you
All you made me do
I react when I hear people ask

Was it worth it?
Yes it's worth living for
Was it worth it?
Yes it's worth giving more

If I'd had my way this would have happened much sooner
But until that day it was only a rumour
All at once you changed my life
And led me in to paradise

Where I had to do
What I wanted to
I react when I hear people ask

Was it worth it?
Yes it's worth living for
Was it worth it?
Yes it's worth giving more

I reserve the right to live
My life this way, and I don't give
A damn when I hear people say
I'll pay the price that others pay

'Cause it's worth it
Yes it's worth living for
'Cause it's worth it
Yes it's worth living for

All I gave to you
All you made me do
I react when I hear people ask

Was it worth it?
Yes it's worth living for
Was it worth it?
Yes it's worth giving more

And I reserve (what?)
The right to live (where?)
My life this way (how?)
I couldn't give
A damn when I (what?)
Hear people say (who?)
I'll pay the price
That others pay

'Cause it's worth it
Yes it's worth living for
'Cause it's worth it
Yes it's worth giving more
And it's worth it

I don't know why
I never thought I'd fall in love
I don't know why
I don't know why
I never thought I'd fall in love

I don't know why
I don't know why

Overall Meaning

The song "Was It Worth It?" by Pet Shop Boys is a dance-pop song that explores the eternal question of whether love is worth the sacrifice and the pain that accompanies it. The song opens with the singer admitting that they don't know why they were dreaming about the person they fell in love with. However, they also acknowledge that they were happier without the person until they smiled, and they were suddenly lost. The chorus of the song emphasizes that love is worth living and worth giving more, despite the cost.

In the second verse, the singer expresses their wish that they had fallen in love sooner. They credit the person they love with a sudden and positive change in their life that led them to paradise. They are willing to do what they want to do, and they don't care what others say or think. The bridge emphasizes the song's message of self-determination, where the singer emphasizes that they will live life on their terms, paying whatever price is needed to experience the joys of love.

Overall, "Was It Worth It?" by Pet Shop Boys is a danceable song that explores the high cost and great reward of falling in love.

I'm amazed by how underrated this song is. It's literally one of their best pieces of music and by the amount of great songs Neil and Chris have written, that says a lot!

@Lofote

Never liked it thaaat much, the drum production is sooo standard 90s, that ruined a lot for me. I also prefer the more melancholic songs of them :)...

@@user-ol9yj3be2r Я долгое время на Фэйсбуке общался с одним из "подвывающих". Милейшая личность, надо отметить, он очень с большим теплом вспоминал этот тур и очень гордится этим эпизодом своей жизни.

@arminfatol

I have heard this one on a cassette tape, recorded from CD, but it had only about 30 seconds from the sond as it was the end of the tape (back in 1993). It took me years to get the Discography whole album and until then, I got only another cassette with random songs with this one from start to end. I was fascinated by the synthesiser sounds in it, and the production, I loved it a lot. I said in that point that this song was kinda representing the Pet Shop Boys. I still love it a lot.

@noircluck

not underrated by proper fans!

One of the best PSB songs. It’s kind of buried in their list of top songs but it’s more relevant than ever in 2023. Hugely encouraging song to me over the years.

@CheGreatEscape

Totally agree, If by any chance this were released between Its Alright and So Hard it would have been at least another top 5 UK and respected, but I guess timing its also important.
