El Rey soy yo
Pete Rodríguez's song "Soy el Rey" is a celebration of the emergence of boogaloo music in the 1960s. The song begins with the singer responding to the requests of his audience to play the unique style of music that they have come to enjoy. The song is structured around the repetition of the phrase "Como la gente pide el Boogaloo, El Boogaloo lo traigo yo" ("As the people ask for boogaloo, I bring the boogaloo"). This is an assertion of the artist's proficiency in producing the sound. The phrase "ajá" that follows each chorus functions as a call-and-response, a prompt to the audience to express their appreciation.
The lyrics of the song also establish the singer's position as the "King of Boogaloo". The repetition of the phrase "Soy el Rey del Boogaloo" ("I am the King of Boogaloo") indicates his dominance over the genre, and his ability to imbue the music with his own distinctive style. The singer acknowledges that "no hay duda" ("there's no doubt") about his supremacy over the music. This message is emphasized through the song's catchy melody and danceable rhythm, encouraging listeners to accept his claim to the throne of boogaloo.
