Follow the Drinkin
Pete Seeger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the Sun comes back
And the first quail calls
Follow the drinking gourd,
For the old man is a-waiting for to carry you to freedom
If you follow the drinking gourd

The riverbank makes a very good road.
The dead trees will show you the way.
Left foot, peg foot, traveling on,
Follow the drinking gourd.

The river ends between two hills
Follow the drinking gourd.
There’s another river on the other side
Follow the drinking gourd.

When the great big river meets the little river
Follow the drinking gourd.

For the old man is a-waiting for to carry to freedom
If you follow the drinking gourd.

Overall Meaning

The song "Follow the Drinking Gourd" by Pete Seeger and Ed Renehan is a folk ode to the Underground Railroad, which was a network of secret routes and safe havens that aided slaves from the southern states to escape to freedom in the north or Canada. The lyrics are layered with coded messages and are thought to have originated with an anonymous African American who used them to signal escaping slaves about the route to follow.

The first verse, "When the Sun comes back and the first quail calls, Follow the drinking gourd, for the old man is a-waiting for to carry you to freedom if you follow the drinking gourd", refers to the start of spring and the time when escaping slaves were guided by the North Star, which was also known as the drinking gourd. The "old man" refers to the biblical figure of Moses, who led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt.

The second verse, "The riverbank makes a very good road. The dead trees will show you the way. Left foot, peg foot, traveling on, Follow the drinking gourd", instructs escaping slaves to follow the Tennessee River, where they could travel safely by night on the water and use the riverbank to hide during the day. The "dead trees" mentioned in the verse were stripped of their bark to create a visual signal that would show the way to freedom. The third verse, "The river ends between two hills, follow the drinking gourd. There's another river on the other side, follow the drinking gourd", refers to the Ohio River, which was the final hurdle before reaching freedom. It was said that the "other side" of the river was where the slave states ended and the land of freedom began.
