Going Across The Mountains
Pete Seeger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm goin' across the mountains, oh fare ye well
Goin' 'cross the mountains, you can hear my banjo tell
Got my rations on my back, my powder it is dry
Goin' across the mountains, oh Chrissy don't you cry

Goin' across the mountain, to join the boys in blue
When this fightin's over, I'll come back to you
Goin' across the mountains if I have to crawl
To give old Jeff's men a little o' my rifle ball
'Speck you'll miss me when I'm gone, but I'm goin' through
When this fightin's over, I'll come back to you

Way before it's good daylight, if nothin' happens to me
I'll be way down yonder, in old Tennessee
Goin' across the mountain, oh fare ye well
Goin' 'cross the mountain, you can hear my banjo tell

Goin' across the mountain, oh fare ye well
Goin' 'cross the mountain, Chrissy fare you well

Goin' across the mountain, to join the boys in blue
When this fightin's over, I'll come back to you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Pete Seeger's song 'Going Across The Mountains' tells the story of a soldier leaving his loved one behind as he goes off to join the Union army during the American Civil War. The soldier carries his rations and powder on his back as he sets out on his journey, with his banjo to accompany him. The soldier reassures his loved one, Chrissy, not to cry, as he is determined to fight for his country.

The soldier talks about how he is willing to fight for his country, even if it means crawling across the mountains to give the Confederates his 'rifle ball'. He tells Chrissy that he knows she will miss him, but he has to go and fight. He promises her that when the war is over, he will come back to her.

The lyrics show the determination and patriotism of the soldier, who is willing to sacrifice his life for his country. However, it also shows the sadness and heartbreak of leaving loved ones behind to go to war.
