After The Fire
Pete Townshend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

After the fire the fire still burns,
the heart grows older but never ever learns.
The memories smolder and the soul always yearns,
After the fire the fire still burns.

I heard a voice asking what happens after the fire
and then the sound of a breaking window and the scream of a tire
And then the sound of Brixton gun and the scream of a child.
The night is hot
But nothing's going to stop
This gang running wild.

After the fire the fire still burns,
The heart grows older but never ever learns.
The memories smolder and the soul always yearns,
After the fire the fire still burns.

I saw Matt Dillon in black and white
there ain't no color in memories.
He rode his brother's Harley across the TV
while I was laughing at Dom DeLuise.
Now I'm cycling all my video tapes, I'm crying and I'm joking.
I've gotta stop drinking, I've gotta stop thinking,
I've gotta stop smoking.

After the fire the fire still burns,
the heart grows older but never ever learns.
The memories smolder and the soul always yearns,
after the fire
The fire still burns, raging through the pain,
blackening the promises, the tears and the rain.
The fire will burn
'til the wind begins to turn
and it all begins again.
After the fireeeee ...Yea the fire still burns

After the fire the fire still burns,
The heart grows older but never ever learns.
The memories smolder and the soul always yearns,
after the fire the fire still burns,
the fire still burns,
After the fire the fire still burns,
the heart grows older but never ever learns.

The memories smolder and the soul always yearns,
after the fire the fire still burns.

Overall Meaning

The song "After the Fire" by Pete Townshend is a poignant reflection on the enduring power and persistence of memory, even in the face of catastrophic loss and devastation. The opening lines, "After the fire the fire still burns, the heart grows older but never ever learns," suggest that the aftermath of a tragic event can leave one feeling hollow and desolate, yet somehow still capable of renewal and resilience. The memories smolder and the soul always yearns, even as the ashes of the past threaten to engulf us.

In the second verse, Townshend paints a vivid picture of a violent and chaotic world, referencing the sound of breaking windows, screaming tires, and gunfire. Against this backdrop of turmoil and destruction, the singer's memories take on a surreal and dreamlike quality. He recalls watching Matt Dillon ride a motorcycle on TV, a moment of carefree entertainment that now feels distant and bittersweet. The world has changed, and so has he.

Towards the end of the song, the imagery shifts back to the fire, which continues to burn and smolder long after the initial conflagration has subsided. The flames represent both the pain and the possibility of transformation. The fire will burn, Townshend implies, until the winds of change begin to blow, and a new cycle of life and loss begins again.

I love Townshend's singing. He's so raw and vulnerable with something wild just barely kept in check.

This album came out when I was in my late teens. I loved this song then, now in my mid 50s I understand the longing that remains after the fire. Townshend captures emotion and the human condition like very few.

Pete Townshend, David Gilmour and Simon Phillips? Live? My goodness... hard to imagine anything much better than that. Wow.
