The Kids Are Alright
Pete Townshend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't mind other guys dancing with my girl.
That's fine, I know them all pretty well.
But in time I know I must get out in the light.
Better leave her behind with the kids are alright,
The kids are alright

Sometimes I feel I gotta get away.
Bells chime, I know I gotta get away.
And I know if I don't I'll go out of my mind.
Better leave her behind with the kids are alright,
The kids are alright.

I know if I'd go thing's be a lot better for her.
I had things planned but her folks wouldn't let her.

I don't mind other guys dancing with my girl.
That's fine, I know them all pretty well.
But I know sometimes I must get out in the light.
And leave her behind with the kids are alright,
the kids are alright.

Sometimes I feel I gotta get away.
Bells chime, I know I gotta get away.
And I know if I don't I'll go out of my mind.
Better leave her behind with the kids are alright,
The kids are alright,

The kids are alright,
The kids are alright.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Pete Townshend's "The Kids Are Alright" depict a young man who is in a relationship but also longing for freedom. He communicates that he doesn't mind if other guys dance with his girlfriend because he knows them all well enough. However, he feels an inner calling to leave her behind and get out in the light. He repeats the phrase "Better leave her behind with the kids are alright," indicating that he recognizes that his freedom comes at a cost and as long as she is with people she trusts, she will be okay. He struggles with the feeling of being trapped and the lyrics sketch out his plan to get away to keep his sanity intact.

In the second verse, the singer reiterates his feeling of being confined and needing to escape. His senses are heightened as he hears bells chime, signaling that he knows he has to get out before he goes out of his mind. He admits that things could be better for her if he left, but her parents wouldn't let her go. Once again, he repeats the chorus, emphasizing that leaving her behind is the best course of action for both of them.

This song is criminally underrated.

Compared to "My Generation"? Yes, absolutely! Though on the positive side, I haven't heard ever heard it in a commercial.

New TV Show "The Kids Are Alright" states this song is the inspiration for its title, set in early 1970s. That didn't ring a bell; I was "there" (1960s) so came to good ol' YouTube for a reminder....uhh.. nothin'! I literally have never heard this song ever in my life! Was it played on AM radio (all we had in the 60s)? Or would i only know it if I had the album? (Couldn't have afforded it, some of those albums were over FOUR DOLLARS!!!)

@christianconspiracytv766

Nah, sounds like a Beatles song..
