Woman
Peter & Gordon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Woman, do you love me?
Woman, if you need me then
Believe me I need you
To be my woman

Woman, do you love me?
Woman, if you need me then
Believe me I need you
To be my woman

And should you ask me how I'm doing?
What shall I say? Things are okay
But I know that they're not
And I still may have lost you

Woman, do you love me?
Woman, if you need me then
Believe me I need you
To be my woman

I guess you'll take your time and tell me
When we're alone, love will come home
I would give up my world
If you'll say that my girl is my woman

I've got plenty of time (I've got plenty of time)
Time just to get through it
Once again you'll be mine (once again you'll be mine)
I still think we can do it
And you know how much I love you

Woman, don't forsake me
Woman, if you take me then

Believe me I'll take you
To be my woman

Overall Meaning

The song "Woman" by Peter and Gordon is a classic love ballad that speaks of a man's desperation for the love of a woman. The song starts with a simple question, "Woman, do you love me?" The man's emotions are all over the place as he tries to approach the woman and confess his love for her. He goes on to say that he needs her desperately in his life, that he would give up his world if she would just be with him.

The chorus repeats the questions and affirms his need for her love. The verse "And should you ask me how I'm doing?" is a subtle way of the man expressing his vulnerability and confronting the possibility that the woman may not feel the same way about him. He admits that he's not doing okay despite his facade because he knows he may have lost her. He hopes that when they're alone, they can work things out.

The song's bridge expresses the man's optimism, that he believes that they can reconcile and that love will come home. He reiterates his love for her and pleads with her not to forsake him. The song ends with the man's passionate plea that he will take her to be his woman.

Overall, "Woman" is a heartfelt and vulnerable ballad that encapsulates the emotions of a man longing for the love of a woman. The lyrics are simple and straightforward, but they deliver a potent message.

Best song Bernard Webb ever wrote.

@elsfane

Were there other songs under the alias?

@user-kk4nu4hq3v

Well, Bernard Webb (also known as Paul McCartney) has written a lot of wonderful songs.

@MrJamieMurph4141969

Wow, I never knew Paul McCartney had an alias name!

Me too. I got to know about this fact, about this band and about this song from a video about songs which The Beatles made but gave to other bands/singers (I can't add a link, can I?). It was a whole new Anthology with a dozen of wonderful songs, each of this existing as a demo by The Beatles, and quite many of them already included in the Anthology (thank God this all is not lost!).

@user-kk4nu4hq3v

And regarding Peter and Gordon + Paul: it was a nice story of collaboration and friendship. A fun fact (I only don't remember, whether about this song or another by Paul for Peter&Gordon): it was rejected by the Beatles as too a simple but became a hit when sung by Peter&Gordon - this is something about the highest standards established by The Beatles (well, to think of 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road' - this one was not too simple, but the song given to Peter&Gordon was...).

Simply put, we don’t reward this kind of talent anymore. So the handful of people capable of it are brilliant enough to find something else to do.
