Hey
Peter Bjorn and John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What happened here
As the New York sunset disappeared
I found an empty garden among the flagstones there
Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And now it all looks strange
It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain

And what's it for
This little empty garden by the brownstone door
And in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more
Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And we are so amazed, we're crippled and we're dazed
A gardener like that one no one can replace

And I've been knocking but no one answers
And I've been knocking most of the day
Oh and I've been calling, oh hey hey Johnny
Can't you come out to play

And through their tears
Some say he farmed his best in younger years
But he'd have said that roots grow stronger, if only he could hear
Who lived there
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
Now we pray for rain, and with every drop that falls
We hear, we hear your name

And I've been knocking but no one answers
And I've been knocking most of the day
Oh and I've been calling, oh hey hey Johnny
Can't you come out to play

And I've been knocking but no one answers
And I've been knocking most all the day
Oh and I've been calling, oh hey hey Johnny
Can't you come out, can you come out to play, Johnny
Can't you come out to play in your empty garden, Johnny
Can't you come out to play in your empty garden, Johnny
Can't you come out to play in your empty garden, Johnny
Can't you come out to play in your empty garden, Johnny

Can't you come out to play in your empty garden, Johnny
Can't you come out to play in your empty garden, Johnny

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Hey" by Peter Bjorn and John depict a sense of loss and emptiness as the singer stumbles upon an abandoned garden in New York City. The garden, once thriving and carefully tended to, is now neglected and lifeless. The opening lines of the song suggest that the person who used to live there was a devoted gardener who took great care of the garden, removing all the negativity and nurturing a flourishing crop. The metaphor of the garden represents a person's emotional well-being and how it can be affected by the smallest of things, just like how one insect can cause significant damage to a whole crop.

The lyrics raise questions about the purpose of this now empty garden, symbolizing the void left behind by the gardener's absence. The imagery of cracked sidewalks and barrenness emphasizes the stark contrast to the once-vibrant scene that existed. The singer ponders who lived there, emphasizing their belief that the previous occupant must have been a gardener with immense care and dedication for their craft. The admiration for this gardener is evident, as they are portrayed as someone who could never be replaced.

The chorus reflects the singer's relentless attempts to reach out to the former tenant, named Johnny. The knocking and calling are metaphorical representations of the singer's countless efforts to connect with Johnny, but receiving no response. It suggests a longing for companionship and a desire to revisit the vibrant garden that once existed. The repeated refrain of "Can't you come out to play" expresses a yearning for Johnny's presence and a wish to relive the joyful times when the garden was alive.

In the third verse, the lyrics delve deeper into Johnny's life, mentioning that some people believe he cultivated his best years in his youth. However, it is suggested that Johnny would have disagreed, believing that one's roots grow stronger as they age. This sentiment emphasizes the resilience and wisdom gained through life's experiences. The line "But he'd have said that roots grow stronger if only he could hear" reflects the regret of not being able to hear Johnny's thoughts, as if the garden itself mourns his absence.

The repetition of the chorus reinforces the singer's persistence in seeking Johnny's presence and their ongoing longing for the days when the garden thrived. The lyrics convey a sense of sorrow and yearning, depicting the empty garden as a reflection of the loneliness and longing in the singer's own life.

Jonas A This is more indie pop/rock than indie pop but here it is. Before Spotify, I used to discover music through a Songza playlist called Retro Indie Rock (R.I.P, anyone remember that?), BIRP playlists and Hipster guest DJs on Sirius XMU. Asterisks are songs you can’t find on Spotify. I think this period of indie music had too much REVERB and twangy guitars lol but I love it.

If I told you things I did before
Told you how I used to be
Would you go along with someone like me?
If you knew my story word for word
Had all of my history
Would you go along with someone like me?

I did before and had my share
It didn't lead nowhere
I would go along with someone like you
It doesn't matter what you did
Who you were hanging with
We could stick around and see this night through

And we don't care about the young folk
Talkin' 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talkin' 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about their own faults
Talkin' 'bout our own style
All we care 'bout is talking
Talking only me and you

Usually when things has gone this far
People tend to disappear
No one will surprise me unless you do

I can tell there's something goin' on
Hours seems to disappear
Everyone is leaving I'm still with you

It doesn't matter what we do
Where we are going to
We can stick around and see this night through

And we don't care about the young folk
Talkin' 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talkin' 'bout the old style too

This song would be top charts if released today...it's timeless.

das 1988

Many songs that were at the top of the charts in the past if released today you could say the same.

@Alexis Girardot The response to this comment is unexpected!

@chisun1978 It's not a bad song. I really need to see the new Top Gun! It's a weird song to be on the Top Gun soundtrack, no?

chisun1978

@Alexis Girardot 😂
I agree, the girl singing in this version is not as good. I actually didn’t fully listen to this live version. It’s bad. Just replying to the comment. I was mainly referring to the recorded album version where I see the similarities more. I am just wondering if the one republic writer was inspired by this song or was subconsciously influenced 🤷🏻‍♂️

Alexis Girardot

@chisun1978I see the similarities but I disagree, everything in the song you mentioned is quite different honestly but something is sure, in this video, the woman's voice is horrible she sounds like absolutely nothing it's horrific

The other day I was walking around a large and very busy garden centre when someone out of sight started whistling this song. I started whistling it back. This went on for several minutes and we didn't actually see each other but was fun just the same.

Ahh, the glory days of indie pop, rock and folk.
