The House Of The Rising Sun
Peter Hofmann Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gamblin' man
Down in New Orleans

Got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Oh mother, tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the house of the Rising Sun

Oh In the house of the Rising Sun

Rising Sun

Rising Sun

Rising Sun

Overall Meaning

Peter Hofmann's song "The House of the Rising Sun" is a powerful and emotive ballad that tells the story of a young man's life of hardship and misfortune in the city of New Orleans. The song begins by describing the house in New Orleans known as the Rising Sun, which has been the ruin of many a poor boy, including the singer who laments, "God I know I'm one." The singer's parents are also introduced - his mother a tailor who sewed his new jeans and his father a gambler, implying the influence of his parents' vices on his own life.

The second verse describes the singer's intention to leave New Orleans, with one foot on the platform and the other on the train, before ultimately deciding to return and face his fate, represented by the "ball and chain" of his past mistakes. The final verse serves as a warning to future generations, with the singer imploring his mother to tell her children not to follow in his footsteps and spend their lives in sin and misery in the house of the Rising Sun.

Overall, "The House of the Rising Sun" is a hauntingly beautiful song that explores the consequences of a life lived recklessly, but also offers a glimmer of hope through the power of storytelling and acknowledging one's mistakes.

@michaelkahlbetzer5689

Dann kam Oper. Und dann wieder Rock. So rum! R.I.P., alter Rocker! Scheiss Krankheiten.

@kulmainer
