Balloon
Peter and the Wolves Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She was playing
With her red balloon
Tossing it you up
Into the air
Throwing and kicking
And blowing and punching
And running and jumping
Onto her head
It was the best friend
She ever ha-ad
She never seemed
To ever get tired of
Throwing and kicking
And blowing and punching
And running and jumping
And skipping and putting it
Onto her head
But, balloons ha-ave
A very short life
She didn't do
Anything wrong
But sad my friend
I ha-ave to say-ay
At twelve o'clock
On the very next day
Her balloon went
The lyrics of "Balloon" by Peter and the Wolves tell the bittersweet story of a young girl and her beloved red balloon. The red balloon is portrayed as her best friend, offering her joy and companionship through simple, playful activities like tossing it up into the air, kicking it, and putting it on her head. The repetition of actions like throwing, kicking, blowing, punching, running, jumping, skipping, and putting the balloon on her head emphasizes the carefree and innocent nature of their relationship.
Despite the happiness and innocence shared between the girl and her red balloon, the song takes a melancholic turn as it points out the transient nature of balloons. Balloons have a short life span, and even though the girl didn't do anything wrong, she is faced with the inevitable loss of her treasured companion. The abrupt ending of the lyric "Her balloon went" signals the sudden and unexpected departure of the red balloon from the girl's life, evoking a sense of loss and sadness.
The symbolism of the red balloon as a fleeting and fragile source of joy in the girl's life can be interpreted in various ways. It may represent the ephemeral nature of childhood innocence and the inevitability of growing up and facing loss. The sudden disappearance of the balloon at twelve o'clock on the very next day adds a sense of urgency and finality to the story, leaving the girl to cope with the abrupt absence of her beloved companion.
Overall, "Balloon" captures the poignant beauty of fleeting moments of joy and companionship, highlighting the delicate balance between happiness and loss in the passage of time. The lyrics invite listeners to reflect on the transient nature of childhood innocence, the fragility of happiness, and the poignancy of saying goodbye to something cherished. Through its simple yet evocative storytelling, the song resonates with themes of nostalgia, impermanence, and the profound impact of small moments of connection and joy in our lives.

He kills a soldier, suffered in war, gets home after hell to a wife who loves his brother now, has a child who doesn’t love him. This makes me sad.

that's what I thought too. See the whole movie and you'll see how great of an actress she is and how deeply she cares for her father and the scene has context. The child loves him a lot that's why she's mad.
