1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

Words and music by Bob Hartman and John Elefante
Matthew 7:24-27, Matthew 16:18
The earth is shakin?
It?s like a bad dream
This world is crumblin?
Comin? apart at the seam but
I am on the Rock
Everywhere I?m turning it?s only bad news
This bomb is tickin? and we?re getting to the end of the
Fuse but
I am on the Rock
I am on the Rock
CHORUS
I am on the Rock, the sure foundation
I am on the Rock, on the Rock
I am on the Rock, His revelation
I am on the Rock
Though the winds may blow
And though the floods may grow
I shall not be moved, ?cause I am on the Rock
The storms approaching, I?m standing high and dry
Firmly planted on the Rock that is higher than I
I am on the Rock
I am on the Rock
Kingdoms failing, they fall around me
Plans eroded, and washing away to the sea but
I am on the Rock
I am on the Rock
Chorus
There is no in this world but our God
Chorus.
The lyrics of "I Am on the Rock" by Petra speak about the world and how it is falling apart. The imagery used is that of an earthquake, bad news, and a ticking bomb that is getting ready to explode. However, amidst all this chaos, the singer of the song declares that they are on the rock, which is a metaphor for Jesus Christ. The chorus proclaims that the singer is on the sure foundation, the revelation of God, and is standing firm on the rock. The lyrics are inspired by biblical verses, Matthew 7:24-27, and Matthew 16:18, which talk about building one's life upon the rock of Christ.
The song encourages believers to take refuge in Christ in times of trouble, as He is the only sure foundation. The lyrics also talk about how the world is falling apart, which is a reminder that believers should not put their complete trust in worldly things but should rely on God. This song is a call to believers to be strong in their faith and to trust in God in all circumstances.
Overall, "I Am on the Rock" is a powerful song that encourages believers to trust in God even in the midst of turmoil. Its message is timeless and relevant, and it reminds us that the only sure foundation in life is Jesus Christ.

I played this song for my kids in the car. The said 'woah! THAT was Christian music in the 90's? I love this there's actually a guitar in it, how come none of it sounds like that today? '. Too true kids, too true... We've been listening to petra in the car for a week straight.

No matter when you listen to them, Petra is always cool, talented, headbangers for Christ! I began listening to them back in the late 80s before the Lord saved me using their music; songs like More Power To Ya, Angell of Light, and Judas Kiss. i'd come from head banging, hard and acid rock back ground so they really appealed to me. I still think their awesome and I still get excited when I hear their songs! Thank you God for using Petra to bring me into Your kingdom!

That's some good stuff right there. Praise God, indeed!
