Mine Field
Petra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Words and music by Bob Hartman
Based on Proverbs 3:6, 1 Peter 5:8, Matthew 16:24

Smell the burning powder?
There's danger in the air
A voice from deep inside is telling you, 'you must beware'
Then enemy is watching
Every step you take
To find his opportunity in every choice you make

And it's no game
When someone lives without His grace
And who's to blame
When it blows up in their face

It's a mine field - you'd better follow Him through
God knows the way - you'd better stick like glue
It's a mine field - better stay on His heels
'cause the enemy kills and the enemy steals
So keep your head down and keep you eyes peeled
'cause life is...
Life is a mine field

Think the grass is greener?
You'd better look around
Everywhere you look another casualty is found
The enemy is waiting
For you to start to run
Waiting like an itchy finger on a loaded gun

Some may feel
They can wander out too far
They may heal
But they may always wear the scar

Better leave the navigation to the One who knows the Way
He will bring illumination
He will light your path each day

It's a mine field - better watch where you tread
Step off the path and you could end up dead
It's a mine field - better stay on His heels
'cause the enemy kills and the enemy steals
So keep your head down and keep your eyes peeled

'cause life is...
Life is a mine field

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Petra's song "Mine Field" warn of the dangers of navigating life without God's guidance. The opening verse, "Smell the burning powder? There's danger in the air," sets the tone for the song, creating a sense of urgency and danger. The lyrics encourage the listener to be vigilant, with the enemy watching "every step you take," waiting for an opportunity to cause harm. The lyrics further warn that making choices without seeking God's direction can have serious consequences.

The song also addresses the idea that some people may believe they can navigate life on their own, thinking "the grass is greener" elsewhere. However, this way of thinking often leads to negative outcomes, with "everywhere you look another casualty is found." The lyrics emphasize the importance of following God's guidance, warning that failure to do so can result in serious harm, with the enemy "waiting like an itchy finger on a loaded gun." The song concludes by stating that leaving navigation to God and following His lead can bring illumination and light the way forward.

Bob Hartman was a master of the rock riff and superb songwriter. If he would have written for the secular market , he would have been a millionaire many times over and NOT have to have a job when not touring.I love the fact that he chose to write for Yeshua.

This was one of my favorite songs when I was a young christian, they have so much deep meaning to their songs. I was praising God to one of Petra's songs blasting when God spoke to me above the music, He said "I love you," audibly, HE IS AWESOME!!! Praise God!

This is a truly timeless song. If it were released today for the first time, it would still be applicable to 2014. A true classic!
