1) Petra is a Christian Rock band formed in 1972 by Bob Hartman, Bill Glover, John DeGroff, and Greg Hough. "Petra" means "rock" in NT Greek, making the band name a triple pun. Rising from the Jesus music movement, and initially signed to [recordlabel]Myrrh Records[/recordlabel], they fought to gain acceptance and recognition in a church culture that at the time believed rock music to be off-limits. Over time they eventually won over most of their critics, thanks to a steady approach and some solid adult contemporary airplay hits like "The Coloring Song," outside of their usual rock fare. By the mid-80's, when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band and was replaced by John Schlitt, Petra had solidified their place as the foremost Christian rock band in the industry with a string of hit albums and singles and strong touring. The release of Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out marked a turn towards modern-sounding worship music that would soon explode into the modern worship movement.
Petra was nominated for and won numerous Grammy and Dove Awards. In 1991, after the release of their acclaimed Beyond Belief record, Petra became the first rock band ever to win for Group of the Year at the Dove Awards. They were also the first Christian rock band to be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
For three decades Petra continued to produce albums despite changes in their line-up as well as the genre and market. On May 24th, 2005 Petra announced their retirement after 33 years of ministry. They recorded one of their final performances in Franklin, Tennessee to release it as their last album, Farewell. Their last performance finished in the early hours of January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina. Bob Hartman and John Schlitt continue to tour under the moniker II Guys From Petra.

We Hold Our Hearts Out To You
Petra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Here we are gathered once again under Your Name
Thinking of ways we all have caused You shame
But we can find consolation in the things that You said
We are all bound in our hearts by a common thread
We look to You who made us one
To give us strength and bring our hearts back to where we've begun
So together we hold all our hearts out to You
And we all can believe You know just what to do
Heal and forgive us, make us all just like new
Jesus, we hold our hearts out to You
Jesus, we hold our hearts out to You
(Verse 2)
Sometimes we forget what it is that brings us here
Sometimes we forget what it means to be sincere
And there are times we are bothered when we don't seem to feel
Then we focus on the One who makes things real
We look around and we feel strong
We feel Your presence then we know that this is where we belong
(Repeat Chorus)
And when we hold out all our lost and shattered dreams
You will be binding every heart with broken seams
With a warm and loving hand
You understand
(Repeat Chorus)
The song "We Hold Our Hearts Out To You" by Petra is about believers gathering together in the name of Jesus Christ to ask for forgiveness and strength to overcome their faults and shortcomings. The opening verse delves into the idea of how they have caused shame to their Lord at different times in their lives, but they can take comfort in His words and teachings that bind them together as a community of faith. The chorus speaks of them collectively offering their hearts to Christ, fully trusting that He knows how to heal and transform them. The second verse acknowledges that, sometimes, people can forget the true meaning behind their faith, and it is only through focusing on Jesus that everything becomes clear and meaningful. The final passage illustrates a powerful image of Christ mending their broken dreams and hearts.
The central message of this song is a plea for guidance and salvation from Christ, but it is presented in a way that emphasizes the power of collective worship and the bond between believers. It is a reminder that nobody is perfect, and everyone deserves forgiveness and a chance to make things right.
