Little Shoemaker
Petula Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the shoemaker's shop
This refrain would never stop
As he tapped away
Working all the day.

At his bench there was he
Just as busy as a bee
Little time to lose
With the boots and shoes.

But his heart went pop
Inside the little shop
When a lovely girl
Set him all a whirl.

She had come to choose
Some pretty dancing shoes
And he heard her say
In her charming way,

"Shoes to set my feet a-dancing, dancing,
Dancing, dancing all the day.
Shoes to set my feet a-dancing, dancing,
Dancing all my cares away."

Then he tapped and he stitched
For his fingers were bewitched
And he sewed a dream
Into every seam.

Making shoes, oh so neat
Just like magic on her feet
And he hoped she'd know
That he loved her so.

But she danced, danced, danced
As tho' she were entranced
Like a spinning top
All around the shop.

On her dainty feet
She whirled into the street
And he heard her say
As she danced away,

"Shoes to set my feet a-dancing, dancing,
Dancing, dancing all the day.

"Shoes to set my feet a-dancing, dancing,
Dancing all my cares away."

Overall Meaning

The Little Shoemaker is a sweet song about a shoemaker who falls in love with a customer who comes into his shop looking for dancing shoes. As he hears her request for shoes that will help her dance all her cares away, the shoemaker is inspired to create the perfect pair. Though he is busy with his work, his heart can’t help but “pop” at the sight of this lovely girl who sets him all a whirl. He hopes she will know that he loves her as he expertly sews a dream into every seam on the dancing shoes.

As the girl twirls around the shop and then dances out into the street, the shoemaker is left with his memories of her and hopes she will always remember him as she dances all her cares away. The lyrics are simple and cheerful, expressing the joy that music and dancing can bring into one’s life. The shoemaker may have been working hard, but he found inspiration in his work thanks to his love for the girl who wanted to dance.

This melody never sounds obsolete even though it was released in the mid-50s. Good songs keep glittering. Thanks for posting this clip.
