Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

If I thought that you'd love me too
Does a birdie fly
Ooh-ooh-ooh-aah
Would I want you
If I thought thay you'd want me too
Does a baby cry
(Would I love you)
Each and every day
(Would I love you)
Darling, come what may
(Would I love you)
Ooh-ooh, I would and I do
With a love that is true
Oh, would I kiss you
If I thought that you'd come on and kiss me too
Does a river flow
'N just in case you'd like to know
Would I hold you
And never let you go for my whole life through
Does a fire glow
Oh, my Darlin', Darlin', Darlin'
(Would I love you)
Oh, you don't have to doubt it
(Would I love you)
There's no question about it
(Would I love you)
Darlin', Darlin', Darlin', I would and I do
With a love that is true
Oooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
(Would I love you)
As long as I'm here, I will
(Would I love you)
For everything that I'm worth
(would I love you)
Just like a flower loves the rain
(Would I love you)
I try to never
disdain
(Would I love you)
Darlin', Darlin', Darlin', I would and I do
With a love that is true.
The song "Would I Love You" by Doris Day is a love song that explores the intensity and commitment of true love. The singer begins by questioning whether she would love her partner if she felt he loved her in return. She uses the bird flying as a metaphor for her love taking flight if it's reciprocated. She questions if she would want him if he wanted her in return, using a baby's cry as a comparison to her own desire for him. The chorus is a declaration that she would love him every day, no matter the circumstances.
The singer also questions whether she would kiss and hold her partner if she felt he would do the same. She compares the flow of a river to how her love would flow for him, and the glow of a fire to the warmth and passion of her love. The last verse reaffirms her commitment to loving her partner forever and refers to her love for him being like a flower's love for rain, accepting and appreciating every aspect of their relationship.
