sailor
Petula Clark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sailor stop your roaming

Sailor stop your roaming
Sailor, leave the sea
Sailor, when the tide turns
Come home safe to me

As you sail across the sea
All my love is there beside you
In Capri or Amsterdam
Honolulu or Siam
To the harbor of my heart
I will send my love to guide you
As I call across the sea
Come home to me

Sailor stop your roaming
Sailor, leave the sea
Sailor, when the tide turns
Come home safe to me

As you sail across the sea
All my love is there beside you
In Capri or Amsterdam
Honolulu or Siam
To the harbor of my heart
I will send my love to guide you

As I call across the sea
Come home to me (sailor, sailor)

"Seemann (Deine Heimat ist das Meer)" (English translation "Sailor (Your Home is the Sea)") is a song originally written in German by Werner Scharfenberger (de) and lyricist Fini Busch (de). A 1959 German-language recording by Lolita became an international hit in 1960-61. The song was covered in a number of languages, most notably by Petula Clark who had her first #1 UK hit with the English-language rendering "Sailor". Clark was also afforded international success with both "Sailor" and the French-language rendering "Marin". A rival version by Anne Shelton was a Top Ten UK hit, concluding her chart career. This song brings back so many happy memories for
I used to sing this in our local for my dear Brother
Who Passed away yesterday
My heart is broken 💔
He was the best brother anyone could have
He went into the Royal Navy at 17
And did service for over 25 years
He was 80 years old and lived his life to the full
But could never leave the sea and went on the Oil Rigs after the Navy
God Bless You my Dear Brother 🙏
WRAPPED IN MY DEAR MOTHER'S ARMS NOW ❤❤❤❤xxxx

In January 1951 my mother drove my grandfather to his ship. On the way she informed him that she was pregnant with me. He was thrilled. Unfortunately, three weeks later he was lost at sea. This song has had a very special place in my heart. When I asked my mother if she ever missed her father she said ,with a warm smile, “He never left me …looking at him right now.

As a sailor, this is relatable!
I go so far away for 2 weeks or so.
My family always wish me luck in sea and that I get back.

Always loved the song but just thinking of all the sailors who never made it home to their loved ones. Deepest respect.
