On Fire
Pheonix Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, our city's on fire
Don't you know it's going to be alright
Alright, alright, alright
Lately, running through the bombs
Don't you know it's going to last all night
Alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright.
Baby, revolution is over
You and me it's going to be alright
Alright, alright, alright
Hard times won't last forever
Don't you know we've got some real good time
Alright, alright, alright
There was a time
She called me sweet, my hero, my cute thing
I gave her all the love I got
Baby, for you I'm a man
This is how I got to prove my love (I love that)
Baby, left me for another
Don't you know it's going to be alright
Alright, alright, alright
Alright, alright
There was a time
She called me sweet, my hero, my cute thing
I gave her all the love I got
Baby, our city's on fire
Don't you know it's going to be alright
Alright, alright, alright
Hard times won't last forever

Don't you know we've got some real good time
Alright, alright, alright

Overall Meaning

The theme of Phoenix's song "On Fire" is that even in difficult times, love can conquer all. The song starts with the lines "Baby, our city's on fire / Don't you know it's going to be alright", which sets the tone that things may not be going well, but there is a sense of reassurance that all will be okay. The following lines, "Lately, running through the bombs / Don't you know it's going to last all night", reinforces the idea that the situation is dire but there is hope that they will get through it. This develops into a kind of anthem by the chorus, "Alright, alright, alright", which exudes positivity and confidence.

The lyrics then shift to a more personal perspective, "Baby, revolution is over / You and me it's going to be alright", suggesting that even if the world changes and social or political upheaval occurs, their relationship will endure. As the song moves into the bridge, the singer experiences a break-up, "Baby, left me for another / Don't you know it's going to be alright". However, the "alright" refrain reappears, emphasizing the belief that things will be alright in the end. From a structural perspective, the repetition of the "alright" refrain adds a sense of unity and cohesion to the song, which strengthens the message of love, hope, and perseverance.

Romans 12:10-21
King James Version
10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;

13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

That happened to us once at a scrap yard in phx. We were shredding up engine blocks and we unknowingly threw a magnesium engine block in, BOOM. I tripped over some blocks trying to run, I just went full fetal position while it was raining metal parts.

Keep tabs on these fires. Very suspiciously frequent. There is an element here that gets off on that. Same ones in Washington and Wisconsin. The Chief nailed it, then they forced her out.

Did you just put water on burning magnesium? Pro tip: it goes boom.

LOLHAMMER45678

Magnesium engine blocks are a lot rarer than they used to be
