Little Monster
Phideaux Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The ghost is very still
Captive of the past
Trapped inside of nothing
‘Cuz nothing seems to last
The world is thin and slippery
Difficult to grasp
Release might come
But what a price to ask

Again, again he walks again
Enacts the same talks again
He walks again, again the same
He thinks the thoughts
Again, again

Again you come to play
You just can’t stay away
But it’s not true
You do not have to stay

Little Monster go outside
Little Monster fly
Little Monster try

You probably know the story
Heard from many tongues
Seen around the neighbourhood
The repetitions one
An insect in the amber
Is as much alive
As this wraith that lingers here
This half-forgotten child

Little Monster leave this time
Little Monster fly
Little Monster try

Dragons live forever
But not little boys
The end could come from an orphan gun
Taken as a toy

Little Monster leave this time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Phideaux's song Little Monster hint at the idea of being trapped in a cycle of repetition and unable to escape the past. The "ghost" mentioned in the first verse is a metaphor for a person who is stuck in a moment in time and cannot move forward. They may be haunted by regrets, mistakes, or events that have occurred in their life. The line "trapped inside of nothing" reflects the feeling of being stuck in a void where nothing seems to matter anymore. Time seems fleeting, and hope is hard to come by since nothing seems to last.

The second verse reveals that "again" the ghost is walking and enacting the same conversations and thinking the same thoughts. This signifies the monotony of repeating the same actions over and over, stuck in a cyclical pattern. The repetition accentuates the feeling of being trapped in a never-ending loop and highlights the inability to move on. The line "you just can't stay away, but it's not true, you do not have to stay" demonstrates that the ghost has a choice, but they are not yet ready or willing to break free from the cycle. The metaphor of the "Little Monster" suggests that the person may be facing internal demons that they need to overcome in order to break free.

Overall, the message of the song is to encourage the listener to face their fears, leave the past behind, and move forward towards a more fulfilling life. The lyrics remind us that we have a choice - to stay trapped in the past or to take a leap of faith towards something new, even if it means sacrificing our comfort zones.

I think the lyrics are about confronting a past/younger version of onesself. Or something along those lines, at least. The part where the little kid voice comes in and starts saying melodramatic rhymes, only to have that voice slowly replaced by the adult voice suggests this to me, at least. The song overall seems to be about the process of growing up and realizing that the child you used to be is still somehow "following" you in some sense. Or I could be completely off base but that's my take.
