Mercy Came Running
Phillips Craig & Dean Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once there was a holy place
Evidence of God's embrace
And I can almost see mercy's face
Pressed against the veil
Looking down with longing eyes
Mercy must have realized
That once His blood was sacrificed
Freedom would prevail
And as the sky grew dark
And the earth began to shake
With justice no longer in the way

[Chorus:]
Mercy came running
Like a prisoner set free
Past all my failures to the point of my need
When the sin that I carried
Was all I could see
And when I could not reach mercy
Mercy came running to me

Once there was a broken heart
Way to human from the start
And all the years left it torn apart
Hopeless and afraid
Walls I never meant to build
Left this prisoner unfulfilled
Freedom called but even still
It seemed so far away
I was bound by the chains
From the wages of my sin
Just when I felt like giving in

[Chorus:

Sometimes I still feel so far
So far from where I really should be
He gently calls to my heart
Just to remind me

[Chorus:]

Overall Meaning

The Phillips Craig & Dean song "Mercy Came Running" is a powerful and emotional expression of faith in the Christian concept of redemption. The opening lyric speaks of a once-holy place that bears the evidence of God's love and mercy, and Mercy himself is personified as a being with a face pressed against a veil, looking down at humanity with longing eyes. The song goes on to describe how this Mercy comes to earth in the form of Jesus Christ, sacrificing his blood so that humanity might be free from the wages of sin.

The chorus of "Mercy Came Running" is a triumphant declaration of faith in the transformative power of God's mercy. It describes how Mercy came running to the singer, like a prisoner set free, when they were at their lowest point - burdened by sin and unable to reach out for help. The singer was able to experience freedom from those chains, and their broken heart was healed by the mercy and love of God.

Overall, the song is a powerful reminder of the redemptive power of faith and the transformative nature of God's love. It speaks to the struggles that many believers face on their spiritual journey, including doubt, fear, and the feeling of being far from where they "should be."

Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me.

He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you.

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭23:6‬ ‭
Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell
in the house of the Lord
Forever.

Even at my worst, Lord, in Your Love, You pursue me with goodness and mercy. I am ever grateful and long to be in Your House, among Your Beloved Children, giving You praise, You are most worthy. By Your Spirit Lord, keep me faithful and true, seeking always only to do Your Will, in Jesus' name, Amen.

I've been a church musician all my life , raised on church and everything....I grew up listen this song without realizing that the same musical impact that had in my teenage years as a young musician ...it will have as a grown man who got out of church, forgot about God ,did a lot of bad things in my adult years. Today I listen the lyrics and totally understand the reason why this song still around in my music library. God keeps talking thru anything...heard? Any kind of way. He's mercy will reach you regardless of your status.
