All Lovers Are Deranged
Pink Floyd / David Gilmour Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It takes a fool to phone a fool
When both have said it all
We make the rule, bemoan the rule
That neither one should call
But love that was
Is love that is
Demands to always be unchanged
But then all lovers are deranged.

We walk away with memories
And clutch them to our hearts
We're disembodied entities
We move in fits and starts
For burning wine
Intoxicates,
And takes all caution in its flames
All lovers are deranged.

You know that you don't really fall in love
Unles you're seventeen
The break of day will make your spirits fly
But you can't know what it means
Unless you're seventeen.

It takes a fight to start a fight
And differences remain
We have the right to think we're right
We're addicts feigning shame
For love recalled
Is love reborn

We're determined to relive the pain
But then lovers are deranged.

Overall Meaning

The song "All Lovers Are Deranged" by Pink Floyd and David Gilmour speaks of the seemingly irrational behavior of people when it comes to love. The opening lines set up the premise that it takes a fool to call another fool when they both have said everything they want to say. Despite setting up a so-called rule to not call each other, it is love that demands continuity, even though it lost its former vibrancy. Gilmour is saying that love, once had, is something that makes us do crazy things, including going against our own set of rules.

The next few lines that speak of walking away with memories and clutching them to our hearts, show that even after a relationship ends, the memories of it stay with us. We become disembodied entities, moving in fits and starts, for burning wine has intoxicated us and taken all caution away. Here, Gilmour is saying that love can be like wine, intoxicating us and taking away caution, and in that state of mind, we conduct ourselves in sometimes deranged ways.

The final verse about having the fight to start a fight, and differences remaining, is a subtle mention of the reality of relationships, how things are not always smooth, and there will be arguments and differences in opinion. Still, we have the right to think that we're correct, and like addicts, we're feigning shame, as we eventually go back to moments of love we recall. The ending echoes the first verse, reiterating that love may be something that changes and evolves, but it still retains the power of craziness in all lovers.

The sad thing is that I've been listening to this album practically weekly for over 30 years, yet I'm still here, 22 hours early, and gutted because I have to wait another day for it to be published. Damn you, David Gilmour, for ensnaring me in your evil web of musical awesomeness and ruining me for pretty much any other band. Damn you I say! 😋

Umm - we are getting On An Island after this aren't we? Please?
