Ryutaro and Tadashi wanted to combine two words to form the band name; something artificial and something natural. After trying a few combinations, they decided on ‘Plastic Tree’. Formerly, there were rumours floating around the web about the band’s name coming from Fake Plastic Trees but this was always disputed due to timing inconsistencies.
In the beginning, Plastic Tree were influenced greatly by The Cure. There was also a large britrock influence. Plastic Tree played a mix of indie rock, punk, and heavier grunge, characterized by Ryutaro’s generic Visual Kei voice and gloomy lyrics. They went through a period where they played more pop-rock and radio-style rock music, although they have recently returned from lighter music to their original roots.
In July 2006, Plastic Tree embarked on their first world tour that took them to Germany, France and Finland.
On the 23rd of February 2009, Sasabuchi Hiroshi left the band and was later replaced by Satou Kenken..

The lyrics of Utsusemi by Plastic Tree are not easy to interpret as they are somewhat abstract and poetic. The song is about two people who are deeply in love but are about to part ways. The opening lines speak of the fragility of life and how easy it is to forget the good times. The reference to a black cat and a kiss implies that they are both superstitious and worried that their love might not last. The second stanza describes how they try to distract themselves from the impending separation by playing games and pretending, but the pain is always there just beneath the surface.
The chorus is the heart of the song, where the singers describe the feeling of the heart opening up and revealing its true self, but still being afraid and uncertain of what's to come. The image of a flower blooming in the twisted heart is particularly powerful. The bridge section speaks of a longing to see the other person's perspective and to understand what they're feeling. The song ends with a simple and beautiful image of rain and bubbles, suggesting that life is fleeting like bubbles in the rain.
