He originally started rapping as Sir Cartier, releasing a mixtape titled THC: THE HIGH CHRONICAL$ on November 5, 2011, that has since been deleted from the Internet, because it was absolute balls. He followed up with the mixtape Young Mi$fit on November 12, 2012. He changed his artist name to Playboi Carti in May 2013. As Playboi Carti, he came into prominence in 2015 with his song Broke Boi. Initially a part of the Atlanta-based Awful Records label, he also performed at the fashion events such as Yeezy Season 5, VFiles, and Raf Simons events, with artists such as Lil Uzi Vert and A$AP Rocky. In 2016, he was featured on A$AP Mob's debut studio album, Cozy Tapes: Vol. 1 Friends -, on the tracks London Town and Telephone Calls, which the latter was released as the second single from the album.
Carti's eponymous debut mixtape, Playboi Carti, which features guest appearances from Lil Uzi Vert, A$AP Rocky, and Leven Kali, was released on April 14, 2017. The self-titled release gained attention from various music publications, including XXL, Pitchfork, Spin, HotNewHipHop, and PopMatters. XXL noted the track Magnolia as a standout cut, whereas Pitchfork critic Briana Younger thought that the release "finds a cloudy and economical mood and stays there, but it's Carti's magnetic confidence that turns just enough into plenty." The mixtape sold 28,051 units in its opening week.
In accompaniment with the mixtape's release, Carti embarked on a tour, which featured him as an opening act for Gucci Mane and Dreezy.
At the end of 2017, Carti was featured on A$AP Mob's Cozy Tapes Vol. 2: Too Cozy, A$AP Ferg's Still Striving, and NAV's Perfect Timing. Carti was meanwhile working on his debut album, Die Lit, which would be released on May 11, 2018.
Die Lit was an album that received mixed reviews, but fans of Carti enjoyed the album. Metacritic rated the album 71/100 with a user score of 8.2/10. Die Lit includes notable tracks such as Shoota, Foreign, Choppa Won't Miss, Mileage, and Poke it Out. This album included features from artists such as Lil Uzi Vert, Nicki Minaj, Chief Keef, Young Thug, Travis Scott, Skepta, and Bryson Tiller.
Since the release of Die Lit, Playboi Carti has embarked on his own tour, while featuring on songs such as Uh Uh (feat. Playboi Carti) on Chief Keef's Mansion Musick and Get Dripped on Lil Yachty's Nuthin' 2 Prove.
However, soon after the release of Die Lit and his tour, Carti was seen discussing a new album, titled Whole Lotta Red . Over the course of the next few years, songs from Whole Lotta Red would get leaked, or played by Carti himself at select shows. On November 23, 2020, Carti announced that the album had been submitted to his label, along with posting several blurry photos. He would later announce several collaborations, with artists such as Kanye West and Future. DJ Akademiks would later announce that the album would release on Christmas day, and was executively produced by Kanye West.
Whole Lotta Red's fan reception was polarizing at the start, but the album was met with positive critical reception. Metacritic rated the album 75/100 with a user score of 7.4/10. The album would later increase in popularity among Carti fans and music enjoyers alike over time — highly due to several tracks going viral on TikTok — and began receiving high praise.
Playboi Carti has announced that his next project, Music, is dropping "ASAP."

I just be stylin', it's hard to sleep (schyeah)
She never made it hard for me (schyeah)
I can't trust my eyes, like, how do I see?
I'm in the high, uh, she's in the heat, yeah
Tell me why? And, for what?
Always prepared, 'cause I never know what
Whippin' that ho with the Fendi
Yeah-yeah, I was lookin' for Benji
I had to smoke out at Means Street
Everybody thought they knew me
But bitch, you ain't even meet the new me
A ho gon' die tryna do me
Look at the sky, it's a movie
She not a wife, she a groupie
If you liked the last chain, check the new piece, schyeah
Red in the diamonds, no rubies
Stick in the dirt like- (schyeah)
Stick in the dirt like doody (schyeah), schyeah
There's plenty of opps in the loose leaf
Goyard trunk, keep it brief, yeah
Stamp on your neck like pussy ('bout what? Schyeah, schyeah)
Stay in your position, lil' nigga, before you get put on a shirt (schyeah)
I was in South Carolina with two hoes, takin' they turn
You play with that fire too much, lil' shawty, you bound to get burnt (schyeah)
SVJ, I go crazy, no concerns (schyeah), uh
Glock in the holster (schyeah), yeah, stick in the Goyard (schyeah)
Put 'em on a poster, put 'em in a graveyard (schyeah), schyeah
She gets angry, she like to text hard (what?)
I don't need a co-sign (what), I need a die-hard (huh?)
I fuck her back in, yeah (yeah), then put her in Chrome Heart (uh)
The Bentley, it's push-start (uh)
I'm a bully, I push hard (yeah), schyeah
Drivin' off drugs, this my go-kart, schyeah
Different day, ha
Schyeah
We gamble on Sundays
I told my momma I was gon' make it one day
Been, been, been told her
It was just the other day, I was on bullshit, eatin' leftovers, yeah
Sittin' here thinkin' about it
Now, it's just G5s, yeah, I don't do layovers
Schyeah
In the song "Different Day" by Playboi Carti, the artist reflects on his lifestyle and the constant pressure to maintain his image. The lyrics suggest that he is always focused on his appearance and staying stylish, making it difficult for him to rest and sleep. He expresses gratitude towards a woman who has not complicated things for him, highlighting the rarity of such simplicity in his life. However, there is a sense of confusion as he questions his own perceptions and the reality around him, symbolized by the line "I can't trust my eyes, like, how do I see?"
The artist delves into his experiences of fame and the unpredictability that comes with it. He talks about the constant need to be prepared for anything, as he navigates through the challenges that fame brings. There is also a mention of female fans who attend his shows, desiring his autograph as a symbol of their connection to him. This fame and attention have led to a sense of transformation within the artist, as he states, "Bitch, you ain't even meet the new me." This showcases the evolving nature of his identity and how external factors influence his sense of self.
Playboi Carti touches upon themes of materialism and luxury in the song, emphasizing his desire for wealth and status. He references designer brands like Fendi and Goyard, as well as expensive jewelry, portraying a lavish and opulent lifestyle. The lyrics also allude to a sense of danger and recklessness, as he talks about playing with fire and the potential consequences of such actions. There is a juxtaposition between the flashy, extravagant lifestyle he leads and the risks involved, hinting at the complexities of fame and fortune.
Towards the end of the song, the artist reflects on his journey to success and the sacrifices he has made along the way. He mentions his humble beginnings, eating leftovers and dreaming of a better future. Now, he enjoys the luxuries of private jets and a life devoid of layovers, symbolizing his rise to fame and prosperity. The lyrics capture a sense of perseverance and determination, as he recalls promising his mother that he would make it one day. Overall, "Different Day" reveals the artist's introspective thoughts on fame, wealth, and self-discovery amidst the fast-paced world of the music industry.
